What We Played #98: Velocity Ultra, Bioshock Infinite, Crash Team Racing

Getting a chance to play Velocity Ultra has rekindled Kris’ interest in the original PlayStation minis Velocity.  While he says “it may not be as good as Velocity Ultra” the big upside is that he can play it now.  “[Velocity] really is incredible, and probably the most fun I’ve had with a game since early Sonic games. Hyper addictive too.”

He’s also played a little bit of Cities in Motion which he says is “quite possibly the slowest game I’ve ever played”. It doesn’t sound like it’s a game that indulges in excessive hand-holding either. “It’s also crazy inaccessible in a ‘F*ck you, we’ve explained this briefly in the tutorial and if you can’t remember it it’s your own fault. You think real city planners get help? Hell no. Now shut up and build a bus route.’ Somehow that just makes it incredible.”

Josh has been rediscovering the joy to be had from getting a bunch of friends together for some split-screen racing, playing “everything from Crash Team Racing to MotorStorm: Apocalypse” while also managing to get his girlfriend hooked on Split/Second.

He’s been hoovering up a few outstanding trophies too, picking the last few he needed for LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4, Need for Speed Undercover and Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation.  As Metal Gear Solid 2 was on PlayStation Plus he took it out for a spin “but my god the camera and controls in that game are awful, I doubt I’ll be going back to it”.

Like Peter I’ve played a bit of Bioshock Infinite but you’re spared my inane ramblings on it as Peter’s view is much the same but he says it much more eloquently:

I really love the world they’ve created but I still have reservations about the way the game handles. BioShock (the first) was a fantastic world, story and atmosphere but a fairly poor game through which you experienced that – in terms of how it controlled and the mechanics of death, ability upgrades, etc. Infinite seems like it still suffers slightly from that but I’m not sure if that’s simply because I need to adjust my controller settings (I’m playing on PC).

Aran is trying to do something about his pile of shame which has now grown to an estimated 300 hours of game time.  He’s not helping himself though as this week he bought Beyond Good & Evil HD.  He’s been pleasantly surprised to find that it’s not the linear experience he was expecting “but instead it has a small open world with different things to do”.

In Assassin’s Creed 3 he’s been playing through the game’s side quests as he’s found “they’re a much better way to explore the game world”.  He’s spent hours just roaming the Frontier either hunting or attacking forts “but who can really call them forts if one man in a hood can overrun it?”

What he chooses to call “a bad luck streak” is hampering his enjoyment of Gears of War: Judgment as he is greeted with “loss after loss and not getting the kills I would like”.  He would also like to see more multiplayer maps added.

Last up this week is Blair who, if you’ve been paying attention to the site you will already know, has been playing Bioshock Infinite and is quite taken with it as well as developing a crush on Elizabeth.

I’m pretty confident that after a week of playing, it’s the best game I’ve ever played. I even went back to Portal 2 just to see and – even though it was good – it just couldn’t compare to the heights of Infinite.

Maybe his next love letter will be addressed to Ken Levine? Those of you involved in our Black Ops II League will know that the team Blair’s in Team C have finally recorded their first win.  Finishing top of the league is beyond their reach though so their aim is to simply not finish last.  So all that’s left to add on that is “go team Bob!”

Have you all been dangling from Columbia’s skyrails this week or has something else been keeping you busy?

  1. Apart from this weeks meets (Tomb Raider, Dirt Showdown and THPS) I’ve been predominantly playing (and have literally just platinumed) The Walking Dead Survival Instinct. Sure it has flaws but I found it to actually be a pretty decent game.

Aside from that I’ve played a few rounds of Everybody’s Golf on Vita as I picked up the dlc bundle and wanted to try out the new courses and characters.

My copy of Luigi’s Mansion 2 arrived today, so I’ll probably get stuck into that over the weekend.

  2. This week have seen an uncanny amount of trophies for me including 3 platinums and a landmark 3000th trophy too. Firstly, my 3000th was There’s Always Peng from Dead Space 3 which is one of my games of the year so far. In terms of my 3 platinums I decided to polish off the collectables and start and finish the multiplayer grind on Assassins Creed Liberation on Vita. The MP is… Unique. Utterly pointless and no fun but got me the plat. The other two were for my Vita and PS3 versions of Sound Shapes. Absolutely fantastic game but death mode made me want to repeatedly punch myself in the groin. For a more pleasurable experience. This is where I have to give credit to Youles as I just didn’t have the patience for the last couple of levels so as a birthday treat for him I let him do them for me ;)
As far as my other gaming has gone, I started Bioshock Infinite… nuff said.

  3. I’ve been playing Phantasy Star Online 2 whenever I had time throughout the week. The Vita version works very well and is a perfect companion to the PC version. The best thing about the boxed Vita version is the fact that you can link your Sega ID to any PSN ID. The downloaded version requires you to use a Japanes PSN ID but switching back and forth on a Vita is a bother.

  4. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, mostly. Review soon.

Managed to scoop a platinum in Mass Effect 3 too thanks the new DLC. Farmed that arena for kills like nobody’s business.

  5. Been away this week so mainly just played Plants V Zombies on my iPad.
Started Bioshock Infinite when I got back today – it’s pretty amazing isn’t it!

  6. This week has massively been about two games – Monster Hunter Ultimate and Fire Emblem (for my very first review!). They both require a massive amount of commitment to get the best out of them, so there’ve been one or two 5am crawls to bed :-/ definitely worth the effort though!

Beyond that I also picked up Lego City which made me laugh out loud within the first two minutes – which was exactly what I was hoping for – and also some Football Manager 2013 on the iPad/iPhone whilst queueing in various places.

  7. I broke my finger and hand on Monday. Went to hospital on Thursday, the same day my copy if Bioshock arrived…gutted! My hand is in a cast with only my index and thumb moveable. I’m still trying to get as much time on it as possible. It’s bloody fantastic…even with my wonky aiming now!

  8. After having the ending of Bioshock Infinite spoiled for me this week I decided to give that game a miss – I love Bioshock so will definitely pick up a copy at some point but am happy to wait.

Instead I just played a few ps+ games. F1 Race Stars has really grown on me. Sure it has some incredibly cheap AI but is a lot of fun in split screen multi-player so that’s good enough for me. Mortal Kombat has also seen some more attention, though mainly just working towards a few trophies. Made a start on Joe Danger 2, which is just as awesome as the first.
Also started my *counts fingers a toes* tenth(?) playthrough of Resident Evil 5 yesterday with a mate. I don’t care what people say, it’s still a great co-op experience :-)
Managed to squeeze in a few rounds of Black Ops 2 too.
Oh, I also started GOW:A – hated it. Terrible cameras, a dull storyline and the whole thing screams “cheap cash in”, would have expected more from Santa Monica.

Hoping to fit some more gaming in this weekend. Maybe finally start the Walking Dead.
