Gearbox Buy Homeworld From THQ

News just in that Gearbox has snapped up the rights for Homeworld and its sequel from THQ. The franchise was sold alongside bundles of other less recently active THQ games such as Red Faction, the fate of which have yet to be revealed.

A post on the Gearbox website reveals that their “first priority to direct Gearbox’s interest to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games, Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with the intent of making them accessible on today’s leading digital platforms.”

That sounds like we may be getting Homeworld HD on consoles, although Gearbox have not stated any concrete plans.

The post ends with a rather odd request, “Please try to get our attention if you have capability and interest to join the effort in developing or enabling Homeworld’s future.”

  1. Re-releases of 1 and 2 would be grand, but beyond that I’m somewhat apprehensive as to what this could bring to the franchise…

  2. I have never heard of this game. It looks quite good though, reboot?

  3. Because Gearbox have such a great history with IP that isn’t their own.

    Oh, wait…

This makes me even more disappointed that Stardock and Paradox missed out, TeamPixel too.

I’ll wait and see I guess, maybe since this now is Gearbox’s IP it’ll fare better than past efforts.

  4. I’ve been waiting for a Homeworld 3 for years. Still got original Homeworld and still have urges to replay it. Great atmosphere and story and still my favourite one of the series.

  5. Wow, I just realized that this is NOT Homefront… I was wondering where all the spaceships came from… -_-

  6. I loved homeworld on pc, if they bring it to PS3 I’d buy it day one – fuck yeah!

  7. Kinda have with a bad feeling with Gearbox…

  8. That’s a real shame. The last paragraph suggests they’d like to outsource it like they did with aliensCM too. I think stardock or paradox would’ve done a much better job of it..

  9. Gearbox will screw this ip up no doubt!
