Activision Held Top Two Selling Games Last Quarter, Says Wii U Launch Was “Disappointing”

Activision have just published their quarterly figures, which include the first three months of 2013. The figures are “better than expected”, and cite two massively selling games. In fact, the biggest selling game (if you include accessory packs and figures, as Activision have done) in dollars in North America and Europe was Skylanders Giants.

Second? Call of Duty: Black Ops II, same territories.

Those two combined made the company the number one publisher overall, with North America and Europe combined. Again, the report includes accessory packs and figures.

However, the latter half of 2013 might not be quite so plain sailing, despite another Call of Duty landing this November. “While we have had a solid start to the year, we now believe that the risks
and uncertainties in the back half of 2013 are more challenging than our earlier view, especially
in the holiday quarter,” said Bobby Kotick.

“The shift in release dates of competing products, the disappointing launch of the Wii U, uncertainties regarding next-generation hardware, and subscriber declines in our World of Warcraft business all raise concerns, as do continued challenges in the global economy.”

“For these reasons, we remain cautious.”

  1. “The shift in release dates of competing products” – does that read like one of the Next Gen consoles has been delayed?

    • I think it depends whether “competing products” refers the products are competing each other (PS4 vs Xbox), or products that compete with Acti’s products, e.g COD vs Battlefield 4. Hard to tell.

      • Disney Infinite.

      • I thought it was called Disney Infinity?
But you’re right, it’s going to directly compete with the Skylanders franchise.

      • It is, my bad.
