EA has kicked off its Gamescom 2013 conference with The Sims 4, the latest in a franchise enjoyed by more than “30 million” players across the globe.
On the surface, not a lot has changed since The Sims 3. Players will still ferry their little virtual peeps around customisable homes and environments as they go about their day-to-day life.

However, peeling back a layer, there are a number of changes, heralding the “next generation” of Sims.
For a start, Sims are much more intelligent. They won’t act completely independent of player control, yet tuned AI allows them to express themselves in a way that affects gameplay.
This AI is mostly driven by emotions. Anger, lust, and depression are but a few of the guises shown in the brief demo and take their toll on how Sims interact.
As for the creation side of The Sims 4, things have been tweaked to allow easier manipulation. Pre-made rooms can be annexed to create a home in seconds. Meanwhile, making your own Sim is just like “playing with clay” with users able to mould their avatar’s physical feature seamlessly.
The Sims 4 is due to launch next year on Mac/PC with no word on consoles versions.
