Xbox One Cloud Could Support Game Streaming

The cloud, that magnificent, mythical thing that Microsoft said was an essential part of Xbox One before removing the always online component and with it the guarantee that every Xbox has access to the cloud.

I still have no idea exactly what this cloud is or what it can do and neither do Microsoft by the sound of it, but they’re going to tell us what it might be able to do, assuming it they can work out how and that it doesn’t cost too much.

“What the cloud can do is sort of hard to pin,” explains Microsoft’s planning and marketing director Albert Penello. “When you say to the customer, we want the box to be connected we want developers to know that the cloud is there. We’re really not trying to make up some phony thing.”

“Using our Azure cloud servers, sometimes it’s things like voice processing. It could be more complicated things like rendering full games like a Gaikai and delivering it to the box. We just have to figure out how, over time, how much does that cost to deliver, how good is the experience.”

So there we go, the cloud, it can probably do Gaikai style gaming streaming, Microsoft just “have to figure out how”.

  1. He means it has lots of possible uses that will be explored in time. Some have already been discussed like cloud computing, save backups.

  2. Just goes to show it was a knee jerk reaction to Sony’s Gaikai.
