Peter Molyneux Unimpressed By GTA V Sales Figures

Grand Theft Auto 5 has beaten all global sales records to become the biggest entertainment launch ever, generating $800million revenue in its first 24 hours. Whilst most of us were simply astonished by these figures, Peter Molyneux is unimpressed.

Speaking at Mobile Entertainment’s Top 50 Mobile Innovators party last night, the 22 Cans founder discussed Grand Theft Auto V.

“You can hardly avoid it.,” he said. “It will achieve around $1 billion in revenue on consoles in just one month. Sounds impressive, doesn’t it? No. That’s not impressive.”

It’s not? Care to enlighten us Mr Molyneux?

“What is outstandingly impressive is the success of mobile companies like Supercell, who has released games including Hay Day and Clash of Clans. Those games, which were released 18 months ago, are achieving revenue between $3 million and $5 million each day. That is impressive.”

Well yes, yes it is, but that does not take anything away Grand Theft Auto’s numbers. I wonder if Peter knows many downloads the iFruit GTA companion app has racked up over the last 24 hours?

Outspoken Molyneux famously left Microsoft and AAA development  last year to form indie studio 22 Cans.

“That bastard Steve Jobs stood up on stage and changed my life forever with a flick of a screen. I realised then that the most innovational thing that you can do is change the way people interact with entertainment,” he said.

  1. Jealous berk.

  2. 3 million x 333 days = 999,000,000 (or 1 million short of a billion).

So it’s going to take either of those games almost a year to equal GTA V’s sales in one month. And obviously GTA V’s sales are not going to suddenly stop after one month either. Granted, those freemium games are 18 months old, but then again, compared to console games, freemium games don’t make as much money early on (and make up for it with a longer lifespan).

  3. From the man who brought the world the cube ladies and gentlemen.

  4. The issue, dear peter is that games like GTA don’t require you to open your wallet once and then you can play as you want, not these games require you keep opening your wallet time and time again for no real reason. One game hits you hard once or twice, the other continuously saps you of cash just in order to complete or continue on the basic functions of the game.

  5. Will he be equally unimpressed with the sales of DLC as well?

  6. The desperate ravings of a hasbeen fading into obscurity, nothing more.

  7. I was very unimpressed with a good few things Peter promised:As an Xbox owner what was going to be in Fable and what did’nt arrive was a start, but then salt rubbed in wound there by PC owners getting extra content free, we ‘mere’ Xbox owners having to pay for another disc, was dissapointed again on 360, by Fable 2 which despite better tech, still did’nt deliver what Peter had promised and before that, i seem to recal Sega being so dissapointed by what Peter had promised to deliver to them and by when…they pulled out of publishing deal for Dreamcast Black+white!.

Peter, here’s the thing, as long as GTA5 delivers everything and more my friends who paid £40+ for it, then they, as paying punters, won’t have been dissapointed at at.

In 18 months time, i’m sure most if not all will be playing mega game X on PS4 or Xbox One and honsetly won’t be at all concerned about what GTA5 sales stand at, nor i’m sure the latest load of old twaddle you’ll be hyping, as in your case, they’ll have been let down just the 1 time too many by you and your promises.

Pete me old mate, some say your outspoken, myself, tended to run along lines of…’It’s 1 thing to be thought of as an idiot, but you don’t have to constantly open your mouth and prove it’, when it comes to you, sadly.

You were fantastic, but then call it ego, or excitement, but your mouth just started to run away with you, you slagged off ALL your previous games in interview with a Dreamcast magazine, which musy have gone down great with everyone else who’d worked on them, you proclaimed DC B+W would be best version, Fable would be greatest ever RPG….Jeff Minters Unity was canned, Milo+Kate was an utter load of smoke ‘n’ mirrors B.s and no amount of telling us we were’nt ready for it, can hide that..you hyped the arse off you social experiment bobbins, Cube or whatever it was, now your poking your snout into works of others.

Please, just comment on your own stuff.Cheers my love.

    • :-( whoops meant ‘at all’..not at at.

Typical Peter, gets me so wound up my head turns to mush.

  8. He’s a knob! And Cliffy B is a right cun….

What’s wrong with the green team unable to celebrate or accept other peoples success?

  9. That man is a flute!

  10. If those games that were released 18 months ago make 3 mil a day then in one and a half years roughly 1.5 bil has been made whereas GtA V has made 800k in 24 hours and will make 1 bil within its first 28 days then that figure sh!ts all over his stupid quote!
