Wii U Update Brings Ability To Display Wii Games On GamePad

A new system update for the Wii U, 4.0.0E, has been released by Nintendo and brings with it the ability to view Wii games on the GamePad. It’s similar to the remote play option of playing Wii U titles on the GamePad, but remote play takes on a new meaning here.

While you can view the Wii games on the GamePad you can’t actually use the buttons on the pad to control the action on the small screen. Instead a Wii remote still has to be used to play the game, which is read by the GamePad’s sensor bar. This was probably the easier option than trying to map some of the motion controls to the GamePad itself.

The other features this update includes are:

  • Automatically receive recommended software and demos fromNintendo by SpotPass, even  when console is in standby mode.
  • USB Keyboard support with compatible software.
  • Headsets can be connected to the GamePad allowing ability to chat through it.
  • Screenshots can be uploaded to Facebook and Twitter by pausing games and opening the sites in the browser.
  • Log in details for websites can be saved on the Wii U browser.
  • Browser now supports PDF files.
  • L and R buttons can be used to rewind and fast forward videos.
  • Nintendo Network ID can be restricted to just the Wii U console, closing off PC and smartphone access.
  • Friend list icon added to Wii U menu.

Update 4.0.0E is quite a big one and does add some big features to the Wii U, and it is live now.

  1. Shame, Wii U pad buttons & Smash Bros. Brawl would be perfect for me.

  2. BREAKING NEWS……. for the five of you who own a wii U .

    • Ignoring the piss-taking *childish guffaw*, I’m curious as to why we’re having such a serious number of Nintendo articles since the top brass change-over. I think I recall the site becoming more PlayStation focused yet I feel like I’m seeing more Ninty articles than ever before. :-\

      • ummm relax there buddy . why dont YOU grow up, & not call me a child. because its a fact that I made into a light hearted poke at nintendont . Wii U is a sales failure. & I agree with you on the recent coverage here at the Towers. I brought it up in the last article about FORZA 5 . oh & for future reference , commenting on my post is hardly ” Ignoring ” . Its the exact opposite actually .

      • I was ignoring your comment for my own take on Ninty articles on TSA. Your piss-taking was chucklesome and I quietly smiled at it! Hold your horses, fella. I’m on the same side (if a thing exists). :-)

  3. Whilst it wouldn’t work for every game the gamepad has more than enough inputs to map the functions (including nunchuk waggle etc.) across for the majority of titles. Hopefully they’ll add something like that in a future update.

  4. They could probably have the gamepad work as a Classic Controller, allowing it to navigate menus and playing a fair few games
    games.
