EA has cancelled the upcoming Command & Conquer game, which was set to revive the series and looked extremely promising. As a free-to-play game, there was an alpha test currently running.
Your feedback from the alpha trial is clear: We are not making the game you want to play. That is why, after much difficult deliberation, we have decided to cease production of this version of the game. Although we deeply respect the great work done by our talented team, ultimately it’s about getting you the game you expect and deserve.
They’re blaming us. It’s our fault that they’ve decided to cancel the game. At least they’ll be refunding any money spent in the alpha, though perhaps the real reasoning for the cancellation is that it didn’t manage to make any.
It’s not the end for Command & Conquer, as they still plan to bring it back in another form. Which I can see being a mobile game full of in-app purchases, or am I just being a bit pessimistic? The game was shaping up to be quite good too, with Stefan writing a preview of the title just two months ago.
It is also being reported that the studio behind the title – Victory Games – has been shut down, according to a tweet from someone working at the studio.
Well that was fun. Victory Games is closed. LFW.

Bad news then, and we hope the clearly talented developers find work elsewhere.

I think developers have to be careful with their ftp plans. I would be far more interested in a brand new IP as a free to play game than seeing a favourite IP get the ftp treatment.

Amen to that, IPs should be treated very softly by studios – especially legendary ones – Its a shame that EA misuse their wealth of IPs, just look at that Dungeon Keeper abomination on mobile devices.

“They’re blaming us. It’s our fault that they’ve decided to cancel the game.”
Isn’t it more that the players simply didn’t really like the game as it was, so it was pulled, and hopefully to be refactored?

Just loaded up the closed beta on Origon, and i was still able to get into a match and play… This must literately be breaking news.
PARKER94!
But the question is, was it Free to Play? Or Pay to Win? I saw it as “F2P” and assumed it was an attempt at a play to win and lost interest before even looking at it again properly, and i still havn’t looked, because im against any pay to win style.

I am in the alpha and a big C&C fan and I am gutted to see this. It felt like they were getting the series back on track after the abomination that was C&C4. EA gave up too quickly on this. The last patch in October made it much better than a couple months ago

“We are not making the game you want to play” Says presumably an EA ceo without realizing that no actually Westwood made the C+C games we wanted to play and they were binned in 2003 after joining…EA.

I haven’t even played the alpha or beta (whatever it is) but I don’t know I guess its a good thing for the C&C franchise. It shouldn’t be F2P in the first place, the fans clearly despise the idea but its a shame Victory closed could’ve moved it the Free to play model. I’m sure it’ll do well with the old usual way we’ve been used to since we started gaming. Simcity did afterall.
