Xbox One Supports Audio CD Playback And DLNA Streaming

Although Sony are currently “exploring possibilities” for the PS4’s media features, including support of MP3 files and DLNA media streaming, at launch the system won’t support these, which means PlayStation fans will have to turn to their PS3s for a media centre in their living room.

The Xbox One however is built to support playback of audio CDs, with Microsoft replying to Penny Arcade and confirming that the console will be able to play these natively.

It’s not a huge win for Microsoft, but the fact that the Xbox One can and will support DLNA streaming – it’s currently in the process of being certified – perhaps is.

Since it’s a Play To receiver, content can be streamed from devices running Windows 7 or 8 – be that phone, tablet or PC, and the Xbox Music Pass will stream music directly from the console, much like Sony’s Music Unlimited service.

That’s not native support of MP3 files, so the only advantage here is audio CDs (so, not copying them then) and DLNA streaming (again, not copying anything directly to the system). It still feels as though Microsoft are true to their word with the “all in one media” promise.

  1. Glad to say I don’t care about features I’ve never used. My Samsung Smart TV and Apple TV take care of music and video.

I buy a console for something crazy, playing…games.

I’m more peeved by the Sixth Axis mobile site constantly switching to the App Store on my iPhone. WTF is that all about!!!!

    • So true… Its annoying for some but its a games console!!
Sony won’t let m$ get one over on them expect a statement and patch info before long.

Back in my day we had to power our games consoles with coal dammit ;)

  2. I really don’t get this whole cd and dlna thing. Are cd’s really a thing still. I haven’t bought one in over 7 years. And the dlna thing is prolly gonna be a half **s version with zero mkv support. God bless a LG tv that does is all (dlna, plex, etc) and a appletv for all my music streaming needs (spotify from iphone, mp3’s from device). Wake up people, ur fussing about nothing, its 2013 so move on!

    • Its not unreasonable to expect the latest console to be able to store/play the most common music formats. Its the consoles that need to catch up, not the users! And no cd’s aren’t quite obsolete yet, lol.

Your last few lines sum up why people are unhappy – they don’t want to use 3 devices to just play music when on a game. It would just be nice and simple to have one thing do it all.

      • I get what your saying how my last line sums it up. PS3 however never was able to replace those devices either. DLNA is horrible, mp3 streaming from a phone, forget it. I for one am glad they focused on games. I’ll keep my Appletv + smarttv for everything else

    • To be fair not everyone has the money to be buying Smart TV’s, apple tv and many other devices, like myself so i don’t think its that unreasonable to expect the €400 PlayStation 4 to be able to play Audio Cd’s, since the brand has from the PS1 days and also to come with the same media capabilities as the PS3 which should be the inferior machine in media capability spec but its not for a great many people including myself.

  3. Can PS3 rip audio CDs? :O
