We’ll have to wait on a further announcement before we can get a picture of the whole launch and include the rest of Europe, but the PS4 has swept its way to becoming the fastest selling console in UK history in its first 48 hours, as reported by GfK Chart-Track.
UPDATE: MCV are reporting that Sony have sold a whopping 250,000 units over the weekend, absolutely smashing the record previously held by the PSP, and besting the Xbox One by 100,000. Who said that consoles were dead?
This was actually a record previously held by the PSP, selling over 185,000 units upon its own launch in 2005, and one which had stood against successive console releases. By comparison, the Xbox One fell a little short of that target, selling 150,000 units in the UK when it launched on 22nd November.
Simply put, it is an astonishing achievement for Sony and the PS4. It will be fascinating to see by just how much the old record has been beaten.
While the UK’s weekly sales charts haven’t been published publicly just yet, it’s also being reported that the PS4’s strong sales and bundle deals helped Killzone: Shadow Fall to 4th, behind Call of Duty: Ghosts at the head of the table, FIFA 14 in 2nd and Battlefield 4 in 3rd.
Further down the list, Knack arrived in 13th place and outsold Super Mario 3D World on Wii U in 14th. Perhaps due to an unfortunate choice of release date, which coincided with the PS4’s launch, this is surely also indicative of some of the trouble the Wii U is facing.
We’ll be back with the full charts as soon as they’re available.

I read that sony had 300,000 PS4s in the UK at launch, and that they were sold out pretty much everywhere immideately!
“We’ve heard the company has flooded the UK with 300,000 PS4 machines”

They might be talking out of their arse though, 300,000 is a hell of a lot!

I don’t want to be happy for somebody else’s bad streak, but I am happy that Knack is in front of Mario.
It is something new, that wants to bring us a news story and a new platformer. Mario will always be Mario.

Amazing to see that the UK alone sold a quarter of what was sold in the US/Cananda, it’ll be interesting to see how the rest of europe went. With the supposed shortage of units available for both consoles atm, it’s going to be interesting to see how the figures move once stock is replenished.

I hadn’t thought of that. But is it more to do with lack of consoles in the US that held back bigger sales?
TSBonyman
Possibly, for both.

Good news for Sony, although I’m not really surprised that PS4 is breaking records as it’s a cracking piece of kit that’s going to get better and better.

Not totally surprised about PS4 selling more in the UK than Xbone, but the difference is huge. And if PS4 outsold Xbone in US and UK, Microsoft will have to start anew next Christmas in the rest of the world…
