PlayStation 4 Now The Fastest Selling Console In UK History

We’ll have to wait on a further announcement before we can get a picture of the whole launch and include the rest of Europe, but the PS4 has swept its way to becoming the fastest selling console in UK history in its first 48 hours, as reported by GfK Chart-Track.

UPDATE: MCV are reporting that Sony have sold a whopping 250,000 units over the weekend, absolutely smashing the record previously held by the PSP, and besting the Xbox One by 100,000. Who said that consoles were dead?

This was actually a record previously held by the PSP, selling over 185,000 units upon its own launch in 2005, and one which had stood against successive console releases. By comparison, the Xbox One fell a little short of that target, selling 150,000 units in the UK when it launched on 22nd November.

Simply put, it is an astonishing achievement for Sony and the PS4. It will be fascinating to see by just how much the old record has been beaten.

While the UK’s weekly sales charts haven’t been published publicly just yet, it’s also being reported that the PS4’s strong sales and bundle deals helped Killzone: Shadow Fall to 4th, behind Call of Duty: Ghosts at the head of the table, FIFA 14 in 2nd and Battlefield 4 in 3rd.

Further down the list, Knack arrived in 13th place and outsold Super Mario 3D World on Wii U in 14th. Perhaps due to an unfortunate choice of release date, which coincided with the PS4’s launch, this is surely also indicative of some of the trouble the Wii U is facing.

  1. Good work. Not surprising really, though the PSP statistic does surprise me.
    Sony are definitely off and running this gen, Xbox is already on the back foot.

    • Psp and ps3 sales were almost identical but it didn’t guarentee long term high sales. Marathon not a sprint and all that

  3. Extremely good start for sony! looks like removing the DRM from the XBone was too little too late.
    Can’t wait too see the official sales figers.

    Surprised the psp held the record, such a good console sadly ruined by piracy.

    • Well, UMDs weren’t exactly a good format either. Maybe that’s why a lot of people turned to piracy (DD in memory stick)

  10. Not surprised at all. Thoroughly enjoying it. Killzone is very good but Resogun, oh boy. New addiction.

    • Yep, loving Resogun, played it more than any other game so far.
