Glasgow based developers Ludometrics have announced Bodycheck, a new medieval sports game “for people who don’t necessarily like sports.”
“Personally, I’m a fan of sports,” explained David, the de-facto Chief Person at Ludometrics. “I can sports with the best of them. But I find most sports games of recent years lack a certain something-something… Perhaps they’re not visceral enough, or they manage not to capture the chaos of play, or sometimes they’re just a bit ponderous to play.”
Bodycheck is a based on a medieval game similar to football where “punching, scratching, and general unnecessary roughness are all actively encouraged during play.”
The game will also include spells to zap opponents and the option to bribe the timekeeper to gain a few more minutes play.
“Bodycheck is a sports game with no rules against foul play, magic powers, and (explicit) corruption. And it will be multiplayer, yes. Did I mention that you can have four-way matches,” said David.
Sounds good doesn’t it? Well, here is the really good bit, some very early footage of the game which will make those of a certain age squeal with delight.
Watched it? Aged 35 or over? It’s  Medieval Speedball 2 isn’t it? Wooohoo!!!

Is it rugby I mean it looks like they holding the ball. I ain’t 35 nor near it but this looks awful but fun

Yep, players carry the ball, so it’s really a mix of several sports. The footage is very early, but it gets the idea across :)

I was going to go with the Speedball 2 comment as soon as I saw the headline but you beat me to it in the article! Always remember my brother trouncing me at it on the ST (Atari ST for you youngsters out there, and let’s not get into an Amiga / ST flamewar thanks) and most of my team getting stretchered off. Brutal Deluxe rule!

That looks great fun.
Is it just for Vita? I’ll probably pick it up regardless, but this is screaming out for a bigger screen in my opinion.
Should be a ridiculously fun local multiplayer anyway (reminds me of Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars on PS3).

Thanks! We’re focused on making a great game for Vita first of all, and then we’ll see what we can do after that :)

I don’t know why the Bitmap Brothers haven’t been given the HD treatment full stop. All the games on 1 disc type affair. I’d buy that for a dollar!
Closest to Speedball recently was Dead Ball Zone on PS2.

Bitmap brothers. Theres a blast (in a literal sense) from the past. Xenon 2 deserves a hi def remake if ever there was one. Oh and the music from Bomb the Bass. Pure class.

Indeed, Chaos Engine and Magic Pockets could also go medieval with a splash of HD, no rush just do it! :P

There was of course Speedball 2 HD and The Chaos Engine that were jazzed up and released on Steam last month..
