It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything of note about the next Doom game. Presumed to be in development hell, Doom 4 slipped off the radar as id Software worked on new IP Rage instead.
Now that they’re almost ready to release Wolfenstein: The New Order, they’re talking about the next Doom game again, revealing that pre-ordering Wolfenstein will net you beta access for the game. The game’s out May 20th, so that means you should expect a beta this year and a release next year, if all goes well.
Given that there hasn’t been an official (re)unveiling, there isn’t much to go on, aside for the rumours zipping around the internet for years. It seems to be in full development now, and going much better than it has since the initial reveal almost six years ago. They won’t have John Carmack this time round though, so it should be interesting to see how they handle it.
Still, it’s an odd way to effectively announce the next Doom title, with no details other than a proposed beta. I suppose it’s a good way to secure sales of Wolfenstein, though. Speaking of which, here’s a new trailer for that too:
Wolfenstein: The New Order will release on May 20th for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. You see details of the Doom beta here.
