Serious Sam: The Third Encounter teased by Croteam

Croteam and Devolver Digital have announced Serious Sam: The Third Encounter, a true narrative sequel and continuation to Serious Sam: The Second Encounter from 2002. The game is in development for PC.

Here’s the trailer’s blurb:

Serious Sam: The Third Encounter is the new long-awaited entry in the cult-classic series, bringing pure arcade FPS action to bold new worlds packed with deadly enemies, overwhelming odds, and serious firepower. Bigger hordes. Bigger enemies. Bigger guns. One last score to settle with Mental.

“Wait,” you might be thinking because you’ve not really paid attention to the story in these games, “didn’t we already have a Serious Sam 3?” And you’d be right. In fact, we kind of had two Serious Sam 2’s as well. The Second Encounter was followed by Serious Sam II in 2005, but The Third Encounter promises to directly follow on from Second.

Serious Sam 3: BFE was then a prequel to the original games, set on Earth, and Serious Sam 4 was a prequel to that as well, and Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem was a standalone DLC in an alternate reality to the ending levels of Serious Sam 4.

Is that convoluted enough for you? Well, thankfully it won’t really matter much, and simply by branding the next game as The Third Encounter, it feels like we’ll really be getting back to that classic open field horde shooting action that makes the earliest games still so beloved.
