Towerfall Ascension Has So Far Been More Successful On PS4 Than PC

Matt Thorson, creator of Towerfall Ascension, has been speaking to Eurogamer about his game and how successful it has been on various platforms. At this moment in the time the PS4 version has been the most successful one in terms of sales, and Matt believes one of the reasons is that the console version is much more accessible for players to play together, than the PC version, as well as the support from Sony.

“I think it’s just a console game, ya know? People have controllers – it’s not confusing to get the controllers like it is for PC – and people have it in their living rooms already. I think a lot of people still sit down with their friends when they play their consoles, whereas they don’t do that on PC. Even if it’s a single-player game. I know me and my friends will sit down and one of us will be playing a game while everyone else is just hanging out.

Another reason it’s done so well on PS4 is support from Sony. They’ve featured and promoted it really well.”

The Ouya version of Towerfall, on which the game started out as an exclusive, has sold approximately 7000 copies since its launch in June last year. In total this title has managed to gross $500,ooo in sales across all platforms.

  1. Cracking game. Really do need to buy a copy of this at some point :)

  2. No doubt now that “Matt Makes Games Inc” will look for an IPO based upon this single game.

  3. I was going to buy this on Steam, then I realised it was local co-op only, if it had online co-op I would have definitely bought it, perhaps that’s why it’s sold less on PC, plus the fact there’s far more competition.

Also, I’m surprised the Ouya stat is so low, wasn’t the game meant to be Ouya’s ‘flagship title’?

    • Agreed. That is both a hilarious and sad sales figure. Bloody hell. :-\

    • I think I saw yesterday that the OUYA has sold 60,000 consoles, so that leaves about 11.6% of people who own one owning this game. Trying to get OUYA owners to spend money wasn’t easy though, I can’t say I ever actually wanted to buy anything on it, not with that awful controller. I mostly used mine with a PS3 controller for XBMC and emulators, but I got rid of it when I realised it was so much slower than my nettop PC I bought in 2009 for XBMC for £200.

Actually, a good reason why most people with an OUYA don’t have this game? They’ve not turned the OUYA on in months and months…

      • Were you an original Kickstarter backer then? It’s a shame really, it had the potential to transform casual living room gaming but just couldn’t pull it off.

  4. IMO this is the best local multiplayer game this gen (so far). Seeing your opponents’ reactions (and punching them in the arm for being sneaky bstrds) is essential to the experience.
