Disney Infinity 2.0 has been officially confirmed for release later this year. On top of that Disney Interactive has announced that Marvel-themed content will feature heavily in Avalanche’s follow-up.
A short trailer revealed a gallery of familiar heroes, all redone to match Infinity’s cartoon art-style. Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye will all be playable, with three available in the all-new starter box.
Iconic villains such as MODOK and Loki will also crop-up alongside characters from Guardians of the Galaxy as well as Spider-Man.
One thing plenty of fans will be happy to hear is that everything from the original “1.0” version will be compatible. Yes, that includes the base too.
On top of that, Disney Interactive confirmed that the sequel will be coming to all current-gen consoles, including the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
In terms of gameplay, “2.0” doesn’t look to be breaking the mould, introducing a number of incremental changes instead. With that said the scope of the game has been dramatically opened up. The first new area shown, Marvel’s Manhattan, is four times the size of Infinity’s Metroville play set.
This scope is also reflected in the characters themselves. Experience points were largely superficial in the first game but this time around they will be used to develop an ability tree, replete with some awesome-looking powers.
Toy Box will also be changing. Disney Infinity’s creation tools may have been fun and creative yet lacked a certain depth and consistency. 2.0 looks to build on this core pillar, allowing players to create actual games, ascribing to familiar genres such as tower defence and dungeon crawler – a bit like LittleBigPlanet 2.
It’s easy to get caught up in all the Marvel content though Avalanche has confirmed that new Disney characters and play sets are still on the menu.
More announcements are to come in little over a month’s time, at this year’s E3.
