Sony Have Been “Discussing” The Return Of Crash Bandicoot

Eight months ago there was a flurry of Crash Bandicoot news with Activision removing the character from its website, listings for a PS4 game alongside rumours that Sony were to reboot the franchise.

Sony Brazil teased with an image of the character,  he also appeared on a road sign the PlayStation 4 advert, and the classic games have been in the PSN download chart every month for over two years, this month taking the top four places.  It is safe to say that Crash is as popular as ever and if there was ever a “safe bet” franchise then Mr Bandicoot and chums is it, over 40 million copies of Crash games have been shipped.

Part of the problem is that Crash does not belong to Sony, they only published the first three games in the series and he now belongs to Activision.  Back in 2011 CEO Eric Hirshberg said, “I love Crash Bandicoot. Those were some of my favourite video games growing up. And I would love to find a way to bring him back, if we could.” Activision has let the franchise lay dormant and there has not been a Crash Bandicoot game since 2008’s Crash: Mind over Mutant.

So, history lesson over, here is the big news: Sony have been talking about bringing Crash Bandicoot back.

“This is very dangerous ground,” said Sony’s Andrew House in an interview with The Telegraph.  “In concept, it is something we’ve been thinking about and discussing, and this is a shift for us. We’ve started to say that maybe there isn’t anything wrong with going back and looking at characters that people still talk about, that were a big part of either their childhood or their youth. I definitely wouldn’t close the door on that.”

Obviously there is the small matter of Activision to get over but the companies have worked together in the past, for example the Call of Duty game for PS Vita. There again, Activision must know Crash is valuable and may not want to sell or loan him to Sony unless there is a large amount of money on the table.

  1. That right there is the problem, Activision brought Call of Duty to the Vita, yes. But it was absolutely awful, even by CoD standards. So if it is to be a good Crash game, Sony need to buy the name from them.

As soon as Acitvision started making Crash games, there was a huge drop in quality.
I would put money on that poor quality continuing if it is them who reboots it in which case it would be better to leave it. Either Sony purchases the rights and finds a suitable developer or forgets the whole thing and makes new IPs. If they’re smart anyway.

  2. dear God please noooooooo!
if there was ever an annoying platform game this was it!!!

  3. If they make it more of an open-world platformer like J&D or R&C i would be interested but i wasn’t a big fan of the original games.
