WeView Verdict: Destiny Beta

The Destiny Beta proved to be a very popular choice for this week’s WeView. Whilst some of you were very impressed with what the beta had to offer, others couldn’t quite understand the buzz, no doubt resulting in much deliberation over their preorders.

We’ll kick things off with the negative comments made about the beta, of which there were quite a lot. Double-o-dave was very critical of Destiny calling it “very repetitive” and visually poor in comparison to Killzone and Battlefiled 4, concluding the beta as “average” and “over-hyped”. Tactical20 was another to call Destiny “distinctly average”, saying the beta fell short in comparison to Borderlands and Mass Effect in terms of gameplay. Echoing this opinion was JustTaylorNow, stating Destiny was less enjoyable compared to Borderlands.

It seems that many of you found Destiny to be repetitive, with LieutenantFatman saying the beta was “dull” and “very generic” as a result. They also said the game lacked “any real personality” due to the weak story-line. Beeje13 was also critical of the story; whilst it had potential they couldn’t help but feel that it felt secondary to the gameplay. They also didn’t like the fact co-op couldn’t be switched off and the inconsistent visuals – the “graphics shine in some places, but lack in others”.

Luckily not all of you were unenthusiastic about Destiny. In contrast to others MrYd was in fact a fan of the visuals, saying the beta looked “very nice… especially the moon”, praising the view that seemed “to go on for a ridiculous distance”. They also thought the co-op sections were “enormous fun”, and hoped that come the game’s full release they won’t be swamped with unhelpful team mates.

One of my favourite aspects of the beta was the random public events, and it’s good to see that it wasn’t just me that was highly impressed by these objectives. Bigchrissyc thought it was “good to see a whole group of people that aren’t actually ‘friends’ stop what they are doing to do a completely random objective”. With co-op being the biggest selling point of Destiny it was promising to see DR-DAVROS  praising “the ease of use to join fireteams”. Outside of the co-operative missions they also “loved the exploration” aspect.

On the PlayStation 3, Dom reported that whilst the visuals were obviously downgraded the game still “plays exceptionally well on the older console”. So you shouldn’t feel like your missing out if you’ve yet to pick up a PlayStation 4.

MadBoJangles provided a wonderfully short review of their time with the Destiny Beta:

Loved the Alpha and the Beta.

Pre-ordered.

Borderlands meets Halo? Go on then, whats not to love???

However, TonyCawley arguably made the best comment this week, for its sheer bluntness alone:

It’ll give me something to play on my PS4 other than the indie garbage so it’s a buy it from me.

Now it’s down to the all important votes. Coming out top was Will Buy It with ten votes, with Might Buy It and Will Avoid It both managing four votes each. So there you have it, following the beta, Destiny is well worth purchasing in September. The co=op sections and random public events are sure to be the most enjoyable parts with the game. However, it seems that repetition could become a major problem – there’s certainly room for improvement.

Let us know if you enjoyed this approach to WeView, or if you’d just like us to dig more games up from the past to talk about!

Speaking of which, it’s time to get voting for one of those older games. We’ve got Titanfall coming up tomorrow, which should be a very interesting one, and you can see the poll for next week below:

  1. I’ve got a bit of a dilemma with Destiny now.
Although I didn’t think a lot of it, a couple of my mates will be on it full stop who will want to do the co-op thing, and I’ve got 2 mates who have been holding off buying a PS4 ’til the Destiny Bundle is released who keep going on about how they’re looking forward to us doing the co-op too.

In other words… I may have to end up buying the bloody thing anyway. lol

  2. Crazy thing is I have no memory whatsoever of actually writing that! I must’ve been drunk or something I reckon.

    • After reading your comment it was more than likely directly after you saw the August PS4 Plus Game announcements. ;)

      • Well I came into this article today to say “damn I forgot to write my piece for this and vote” only to find I did write a piece and did vote. Something odd with that!

      • I can beat that…
I’ve had a job sheet on my desk for a design for a client, created the design, then emailed it only to have the customer asking why they’ve received a second design discovering I’d already done and sent the job the day before.
Thats when you know you’ve probably drunk a bit too much the previous couple of nights. Then the fact once you finish work and you can’t remember what you had for lunch confirms it. :)

  3. I’ve actually changed my opinion since the WeView and have gone from Will buy it to Will avoid it. The things I’ve read since about the length of the game and late game hostility to solo players put me off to the point of cancelling my pre-order.

Still doesn’t change the end result tho, the Buy Its have a pretty healthy lead.

  4. Forgive me if I’m being unreasonable, but I don’t quite understand the purpose of this WeView. The Beta is over, so isn’t it best for anyone without an opinion on the game to wait until release and see the reviews of the actual game? I love WeView, and it’s a great tool, but I just don’t like the idea of this one resulting in any more preorders for the game, preorders with little or no perks left after the Beta.

Of course my opinion may be a little forward, considering my dislike of what Bungie did with Destiny, “borrowing” so damn much from F2P Warframe and still delivering a lackluster, boring and repetitive experience. The game will already sell like hotcakes, heck I’m sure it has already, so I don’t think it needs any more preorders, which is a marketing model not very favorable to the consumers – especially in a community where hype takes you a long, long way.
