Video: A Quick Look At The Art of Alien Isolation

I loved Alien: Isolation when I reviewed it. I also think the film is fantastic too. One of the best things about the whole franchise is how well they designed everything to look like it was well used but also futuristic. That leaves us with a weird kind of 1979 vision of the future and the game managed to capture the feeling of the original movie brilliantly.

This new book, released to compliment the game, shows how they worked up the design of the characters, weapons and locations in the game so that they did justice to the source material. It’s packed with great concept art and model renders, for the final game but also for many of the elements they explored that didn’t make it into the game itself.

We’ll be giving away a few copies of the book featured in the video above, courtesy of our friends at Titan Books. Keep your eyes on TSA for details of that competition in the coming days.

  1. Looks great. I’m a big fan of the 1979 future vision aesthetic. My favourite is the fact it’s 2137, but everyone is still listening to music on cassette tapes and boom boxes! Will deffo keep eyes peeled for this.

  2. Only watched 2mins of the video and decided to stop as I do not want to see the pages xD
I love the game and the movie aswell, I cannot belive the game had 1979 movie elements and I have took a few screenshots and compared it to the film and the detail is astonishing.
Looking forward to the competition. I feel like a kid on Christmas and the comp is Christmas eve lol.

    • Same. Made it up to the spoiler warning before I thought it’s probably best to wait until I’ve played it, just in case. Added to my watch later list.

  3. GOTY

  4. It’s an incredible game and part of that is down to the insane attention to detail they put into re-creating the sets from the original movie. They got the look and the atmosphere spot on and if you’re a huge fan of the movies, you’ll enjoy every minute. That is every minute that you’re not cowering under a desk, praying for your life whilst the Alien searches the room looking for you. When you see/hear those feet stomping towards you, it’s terrifying. I can’t remember the last time I was this frightened whilst playing a game.

The Alien is so unpredictable, you have to rely on your own instincts to escape undetected. It feels like you’re actually there and it’s brilliant. It would be something else to play this with PS Morpheus.

The game received a fair bit of criticism – too hard, too long, manual saves – and yet these are the things I appreciated most. It is survival horror after all. I remember playing games like the original Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 1/2 on the PS1 which were very punishing if you messed up. It was tough but the feeling of achievement when you made it to a save point or past a particularly tough section has all but vanished from modern games, sadly.

I didn’t watch the whole video but what little I saw of the book looks great. It would be nice to see these beautiful environments without the threat a eight foot killing machine sneaking up behind you.

  5. Sounds good! Think I’ll wait on the GOTY edition before picking up this game as I want all the dlc, but I’m keen to give it a go.
