WeView Verdict: Bound By Flame

I think it’s safe to say that Bound by Flame isn’t a very popular game. When we say that, we mean that it seems that no one cares about it enough to have played it and leave their comment on WeView, as plenty of you are usually eager to do.

Well, aside from JustTaylorNow who is our shining beacon in an otherwise empty void of comments for WeView. Obviously, we can’t expect everyone to respond to each game, but we’re going to need more than that to keep this feature afloat in the future… you can always leave your (late) opinions below!

Firstly, before we get to Taylor’s comment and spend as many words as possible dissecting it, there was another comment from TSA user Osyrhia who said that while they haven’t played the game, that “it looks like a waste of money”.

Taylor – the one who had played the game – backed up this fact, and wasn’t very happy with it at all. Starting with calling it the “worst game on PS4 right now” before backing up that statement by saying “it’s worse than Basement Crawl” (which he hadn’t played yet).

In our review, Dan actually found that the game was above average and by no means bad, scoring it 6/10 and saying “If you can look past the poor narrative and weak character dialogue Bound By Flame is a solid action RPG.” despite claiming that it was rushed to fill the gap of action RPGs.

“Just writing about this game makes me very angry” continued Taylor. He really wasn’t happy that we made him do exactly that, then. Furthermore, it sits as a mark on his otherwise pristine trophy collection, and can’t be deleted from there. Taylor goes onto suggest quite an apt method of destruction for those unfortunate enough to have purchased it: “If you already have it & ain’t played it yet, burn it, burn the case, the disc…”

Thankfully, after rounding up the TSA staff members, one of us had actually played it. Matt then shared his opinion on the game, and while he wasn’t as negative as Taylor, he said that it “felt like a grind even before I got out of the first couple sections of the game” and that while the lore was solid “the dialogue was painfully tacky, with awkward and dull jokes thrown into just about every conversation.”

While the RPG elements looked deep enough, they couldn’t pull Matt in further and he was only able to stick around for the first four or five hours, so only recommends this one to “die-hard” RPG fans.

So, that leaves us with a total of two votes for Avoid It and nothing else. It seems like you’ve all been doing that anyway, so the final vote for this week’s WeView is Carry On As Normal.

Now, poll time. Tomorrow we’ve got Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty coming up, so prepare your responses and play it if you haven’t already. Remember and vote for something you might actually want to write about!

  1. I’d comment on it if I’d played it. Looked poop though and the reviews I read where not exactly complementary. Played none of the games on the new poll either but have played the original Metro games.

  2. Looking forward to tomorrow’s then. Just bought Oddworld yesterday and played quite a lot of it so far.

  3. I’m really wanting a decent rpg for my ps4 and watched this quite excitedly up until the reviews came. It clearly wasn’t what i was hoping for so i’ve not bothered buying it.

Hopefully Dragon Age will be a better bet

  4. “Remember and vote for something you might actually want to write about!”

I think this is probably why there wasn’t such a great response for this game – My suspicion is that people are voting for games that they want to know more about (which makes absolute sense), but if everyone has avoided it due to poor reviews or whatever, there cannot be a suitable base in order to provide the feedback they are wanting.

That being the case, I think people do need to vote for something they can feed back on rather than something they want more info on. That isn’t a criticism, just an observation.

    • That’s how I vote! Mostly for big name games I haven’t played yet, which I guess are big names because they’ve scored well in reviews and get talked about! TSA peeps, fancy revealing the voting trend that lead to Bound By Flame getting picked?

      • Yeah, that was my guess & I really don’t think you are alone – It’s also probably how I would vote if I a) take notice of when voting takes place & b) if I actually bothered to vote! ;)

It would be great if it could work that way (somewhat like the users section of metacritic with less penises & strategic levelling of scores), but sadly, it does rely on someone actually having played the game &/or being willing to provide a short snappy review.

In terms of the trend though, I guess it depends on just how many voted. If for example there were only 3 votes cast in total, with 2 being for Bound in Flame (due to curiosity) & just the one being for some other title, Bound in Flame would surely win by default.

Not saying there is anything wrong with voting for a game you want to know more about (quite the opposite in fact!), but just that it may not have the desired result if it is a complete stinker, as seems to be the case here.

      • That’s fair enough, thanks for the feedback. If only everyone played everything!

    • Spot on Forrest, If there isn’t a game i’ve played on the list, i usually opt for the one i’m more interested in hearing about instead.

  5. i meant to post a comment, but i forgot, kinda says it all about the game really.

not entirely awful, but not all that good either.
    graphically, ok.
combat, ok, a hard to pull off counter system, well, hard for me, and enemies that can break through most combos.
means the game is pretty hard, for me at least, and i’m playing on easy.
it’s not Dark Souls hard, but hard enough, and maybe the harder difficulty levels will be closer.
in many games, if you have some skill, you can avoid taking damage, here’ that doesn’t seem like an option.
like i said, even if you’re in the middle of a combo, the enemies can still attack you, and the game just isn’t responsive enough to allow you to react on the fly.

mind you, i would have gone for bargain bin it, and i mean real bargain bin, over 20 quid, forget it.
because the fact is right now, this is about the only option, that i can recall, for an action RPG on PS4 right now.

although, there is Shadow of Mordor now, that’s RPGey right?
