Out This Week: Dragon Age, Far Cry 4 & Grand Theft Auto V

This week brings sequels, ports, and games of all sorts as we continue to wade through the end-of-year bloc. Leading the charge is Rockstar North’s re-launch for Grand Theft Auto V, flanked by the slightly unhinged Far Cry 4 as well as BioWare’s Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Easily demanding over a hundred hours between the three of them, it’s easy to see how gamer’s backlogs get out of hand quickly. If not enticed by the big three blockbusters, there are a few other games waiting in the wings including the Sonic reboot and WWE 2k15.

Grand Theft Auto V | PS4, Xbox One | Today

But firstly, let’s get back to one game that’s sure to blaze its way up the charts. Having launched just over a year ago, Grand Theft Auto V came fairly late to the party though still managed to wow fans with its satirical setting and characters, not to mention a fleshed out multiplayer component.

Still, despite its impressive visuals and open-world gameplay, we were left wondering what GTA V could be if it launched on new hardware. Well, this week Rockstar has the answer, even if it does come in the form of an enhanced port.

Far Cry 4 | PS4, PS3, 360, Xbox One, PC | Today

Also launching today, we have the follow-up to one of the past generation’s most superb first person shooters. Manic despots, spiritual tribes, and rampart wildlife all come together as players gun their way through the mountainous province of Kyrat.

Far Cry 4 looks like a hell of a lot of fun and hopefully it won’t fall victim to constant bugging like Ubisoft’s other leading flagship, Assassin’s Creed Unity. We’ll have a review of this one as soon as possible

Dragon Age: Inquisition | PS4, PS3, 360, Xbox One, PC | Friday

Over the past week, critics have been labelling BioWare’s latest epic as the one to watch. Though we were always guaranteed a engaging story and well-crafted characters, Inquisition is  bringing a slew of improvements to the table as well.

Combat takes the best bits from both previous games, creating a system that is both tactical and action heavy. Inquisition will also be first game in the series to feature online co-operative play, sporting a variety of playable heroes. Then there are the in-game visuals, of course. Origins and it sequel were far from pretty but this third instalment looks fantastic, thanks to a brochure of different settings, creatures, and races.

WWE 2k15 | PS4, Xbox One | Friday

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal | 3DS | Friday

Sega’s speedy blue hedgehog has been struggling for a while now. Though there have been briefs glimmers of innovation, they’ve yet to restore their mascot to his former glory. Enter Sonic Boom, the publishers attempt to resuscitate the ailing franchise. Sadly, if the initial wave of reviews are to be believed, Shattered Crystal is far from a return to form despite Sly 4 developer, Sanzaru Games, helming the project.

Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric | Wii U | Friday

Escape Dead Island | PS3, 360, PC | Friday

Launching on PC and last-gen systems, Escape Dead Island is the latest from War of the Roses developer, Fatshark. It’s a cell-shaded spin-off and that focuses more on story and suspense compared to the two previous games. It’s not completely severed itself from the series lore, however, featuring cameos from returning characters and an emphasis on improvised weaponry. Those who pre-ordered a copy will also find themselves booked into next year’s Dead Island 2 beta.

  1. The wildlife in Far Cry 4 is a defensive wall?

    I think you meant rampant.

  2. This is probably the best week for PS4 so far (for me personally). The more I read about GTA5, the more I’m excited to play that over Far Cry 4, (but both look ace). It’s the little details with GTA5 that seem great – like the camera automatically switching to 3rd person in cover or whilst driving, if that’s your preference. I also never considered how the scale of the cities would feel from eye level. It’s also a huge bonus for me that a lot of the trophies (particularly the online ones) will auto-pop due to Rockstar’s Social Club.

Apart from the co-op I skipped Far Cry 3 so after hearing great things about it, I’m even more excited by 4! The only problem will be deciding which to play first.

I even like the look of Dead Island Escape, as it seems far more polished than the earlier trailers.

    Great week of releases!

    • It’s quite mental this week. I’d also like to give a shout out to Never Alone (the lovely little title with the snowy Arctic fox and the little girl). I believe that’s out today on the PS4, Xbox One and PC. It’ll get lost in the usual bombastic stuff we know and love but it looks utterly charming in its own way.

      • Yeah, vjmwilliams (further down the comments) mentions that – will definitely be grabbing that too, looks wonderful! :)

  3. Far Cry 4 for me. Hoping to get it done quite quickly (while still enjoying it) to sell it on ASAP and then buy GTAV. Made a deal with myself I won’t buy two full priced games a month. Wonder how long that will last.

DA is on the radar. Never completed Origins but did fairly enjoy it at the same time.

    • Pfft, “won’t buy two full priced games a month”. Who are you trying to kid? :p

Btw – wife is out Friday evening if you fancy co-op, which should give me a couple of nights solo play beforehand, if you’re looking to get Far Cry 4 done quickly?

      • Not fussed about it getting done early but Friday night could be good. Not doing anything as of just now. However, I will warn you, I will inevitably be having a drink so my play could be erratic!

      • Aside from the FC4 reference, that last sentence seems like it could be taken another way! ;)

      • A drink you say? There would also be a good chance I’d be drinking too. I can imagine this would make it rather amusing! Will keep you posted of my solo progress and play it by ear, if that’s cool?

@Forrest – indeed, and since I’m married the “solo play” bit is probably more than just a couple of nights, if I’m being honest ;)

      • Ha in future I might have to be a bit more … specific about what I mean!

      • Being more specific could end up getting you arrested. ;)

      • I was tempted to say graphic but my better judgement won.

  4. So guys, anyone going to put a 30 man GTA V PS4 Meet together? I’d do it myself but my schedules all over the place.
Could do a random timed survival mode, 29 V 1 man hunts could be a good one.

  5. There’s also a downloadable title called Never Alone which is a really beautiful looking puzzle platformer based on traditional inuit folklore. For those of us who spent a little too much in the current sale! Cant wait to try this game to be honest.

    • Is that out this week too? :O Could be an even more expensive week for me then, and hopefully Costume Quest 2 will reach PS4 too.

  6. Either GTA V or Far Cry 4 for me this week, and i’m also interested in Never Alone .

  7. Probably the biggest week, and I’m not planning to get anything. Still got even half way through halo 1 on X1, got a few more trophies to get out of sleeping dogs on ps4, and 3 or 4 psn games I have bought in the last few weeks.

  8. WWE15 for me. The only game I’ve missed in the series since Smackdown 1 on the PS1 was last year’s WWE14 and that was only because I was budgeting for the new consoles. Looks great and I’m intrigued by the new grappling system.

  9. Just got Far Cry 4, but nicely stuck into AC Unity, so won’t be starting it anytime soon.

Will get GTA5 soon too, but need to wait a bit to keep the wife happy!

  10. I’ll be getting FC4 & GTA V for Christmas so that’ll give me a few weeks to play LBP 3 before then. I really should be getting stuck into my backlog but can’t resist new FC, LBP and GTA.
