The Wii U Zelda Game Has Lost Its Release Date

Nintendo’s earnings release for the fiscal year ending March 2015 – which I’m sure you will all be reading this bedtime – has a list of release dates for forthcoming games. It reveals that the Zelda game for the Wii U, which was originally meant to be out this year, now has a very vague ‘TBD’ release date.

Some have speculated that the game will now skip the Wii U completely, as sales have slowly been tapeing off for the console, and it will now be moved to become a launch title for the next Nintendo console which has the codename NX.

A few months ago series producer, Eiji Aonuma, has confirmed that The Legend of Zelda Wii U would be delayed and would not be shown at E3.

  1. Maybe because, out of nowhere and after more than a year of relative mediocrity on PS4 and XBone, 2015 suddenly seems to be full of big exciting games?

Maybe Nintendo underestimated the competition this year and wants to get out of the way until 2016.

But withdrawing it from E3 as well does have more serious implications.

  2. Not showing it at E3 may not include a showing in the Digital Direct Event.

I think it’s just a case of a delay due to being a highly ambitious project ulike what they’re used to (open-world). It’ll definitely be released on Wii U, but it could become cross-gen like Twilight Princess.

  3. If it does move to NX it may well be the last time I take a punt on a Nintendo console. One of the reasons I persuaded myself to get a Wii U was that Zelda would be appearing on it at some point, shifting it to a successor will have the exact opposite effect on me to that which is intended with such a move.

    • It’ll probably be the last Nintendo console anyhow!
