Capcom Say HD Remasters Are A “Key Business”

It looks like Capcom will continue to mine their extensive back catalogue to create HD remasters of classic, and perhaps not so classic, games.  During a Q&A session regarding the company’s end of the year financial report a spokesman responded to a question about a possible conflict between packaged and downloadable games.

“HD remasters of our catalogue hit titles will be one of our key business activities … [digital sales] created new demand for these titles. For example, overseas download sales of “Resident Evil” (HD Remastered) in the past fiscal year were far higher than we expected.

“It is not a risk but rather the growth of the download sales channel gives users more options. We regard this as growth in opportunities to have allow access for more people to enjoy our games.”

I wouldn’t say no to Asura’s Wrath HD, are there any Capcom titles you would like to be remastered?

  1. To be fair these are the kind of remasters I do like. Ones from years and years ago that are genuinely receiving a cosmetic overhaul. It’s no surprise RE HD was successful for that reason.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a Monster Hunter Remaster (seeing as they can’t make a western console version of the game for Xbox/Playstation). Perhaps Freedom Unite HD with online co-op and trophies. I’d go for it easily, the damn game has nigh on 500 hours of gameplay.

  2. Marvel vs capcom, x men vs street fighter, marvel super heroes (the one with thanos, and key use of the infinity gems) crash bandicoot 3:warped, nightmare creatures 1, and of course :the legacy of kain series

    • Umm, are all of those Capcom?? I can only see about 3 games in what you have listed (including the below) that actually belong to them?

  3. Viewtiful Joe! And Onimusha has to be primed for a comeback…

    • Oh and blooming HD Monster Hunter!

      • We might get Monster Hunter 4G on Wii U, like 3 before it. And I’m sure they could add more bloom for you. ;-)

I’ve never played Viewtiful Joe, so I’d be down for that.

    • Onimusha, definitely due a return in some form. Combat in that was ace.

  4. Tenchu and all 3 digimon world’s, but not the crappy ps2 game they brought out

  5. Okami (a true PS4 remake would be amazing), Powerstone (please lord!), Onimusha…

Capcom have some great games that would only get better with an HD lick of paint. It’s a little worrying to see so much recycling this early in a console’s lifecycle, but a good game is a good game I suppose.

    • In a lot of cases, remakes of games that already exist & just require a lick of paint are a good way to build some quick income to help fund those AAA titles that everyone yearns for. With that in mind, I am perfectly ok with remakes as long as their existence doesn’t take away from any new experiences that they may be working on.

Not sure what that might actually be in Capcom’s case of course (most likely an ultra turbo edition of something!), but still…

      • thing is they are taking time away from new games. most devs have done nothing but remasters this gen and some such as Capcom are making them their number one priority. wake up cos the evidence is right in front of you. look how lacking the games are this year.

      • Yeah, I find that it helps if you actually bother to read comments rather than just reply & state things that have already been covered.

Case in point: “In a lot of cases, remakes of games that already exist & just require a lick of paint are a good way to build some quick income to help fund those AAA titles that everyone yearns for. With that in mind, I am perfectly ok with remakes as long as their existence doesn’t take away from any new experiences that they may be working on”. That was the first thing I said.

Additionally, I constantly see you requesting that people not be rude in your comments, yet 9 times out of 10, you will then go on to be rude to the person you are asking not to be rude.

It’s not anywhere near as prevalent in this post (which is good to see), but telling people to ‘wake up’ is perhaps not the best way to get your point across. It assumes that I/we walk around with our eyes closed & you can’t actually say that with any conviction based on one post. That’s one of the nicer examples though.

I can’t say that I have noticed how ‘lacking’ games are this year, as I have simply been too busy playing stuff. I’ve certainly had more than enough to keep me happy/entertained.

Is it just that things haven’t come out that have your interest perhaps?

    • There’s not much to be improved from the PS3 version of Okami though. That already renders at significantly more than 1080p.

But I’d love to see a Dragons Dogma remaster. It’s sorely needed.

      • I was hoping for a more extensive reworking for Okami – something that keeps the core gameplay, but makes use of all the PS4’s additional grunt. The original was a beautiful game anyway, but the art style seemed to suggest there were all sorts of effects that could be added with all that current gen power…

I would take a straight port of Powerstone though – DC graphic and all. That game is an absolute blast – my friends and I still fire it up if we all get together. It’s held up so well. Get on it Capcom!

      • So a remake or sequel then, not a remaster. I could get behind that, especially a sequel.

  6. Mega Man 2 please.

  7. Capcom were one of the earliest to do the remakes & re-releases so this isn’t a surprise.

  8. Any of the Monster Hunter games, although I’d favour them actually bringing out a new game on a Sony console.

  9. I loved how remasters was handled last gen. As collections (and the occasional single, but important game like Okami) of games whose systems doesn’t look good on modern televisions. The jump to HD added a lot.

Current remasters seem to be all singular titles, and overpriced too.

  10. yeah, because who wants new games right?

that said, remasters of the Dino Crisis games would be awesome, if done like the Resident Evil remaster.
the original PS1 games, not that awful xbox sequel.

but i can’t see that happening because the Resi remaster was just a port of the Gamecube version upgraded to HD, i can’t see them doing a whole PS1 hd remake to that quality from scratch.
