The Fate Of Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter Is In Your Hands

That there wasn’t a conclusion to the story told in the classic Shenmue games has long been a source of anguish for fans of the pioneering games and the Dreamcast. In a twist of fate, Sega’s then rivals get to help those dreams come true, as Yu Suzuki took to the stage at Sony’s E3 conference to launch what’s bound to be a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign.

That’s right, if you want to see Shenmue 3 become a reality, you need to head onto Kickstarter and put some money up, or just trust that a huge number of other people will do so. The Kickstarter puts this as a PS4 and PC game, with backers getting a choice between the two.

It also pencils release in for December 2017, so I’m afraid you’ll still have quite a while to wait, even if the Kickstarter does succeed.

  1. This WILL get funded, no doubt about it! It’s already surpassed $750,000 of the $2,000,000 it needs.
Though why Sony aren’t ponying up the dough is a little confusing.. Could’ve had another exclusive on their hands.

    • the Kickstarter page only mentions PS4 and PC.
so it looks like they’ll have console exclusivity.

and maybe Sony did put up some money, but they might need a little bit extra to finish.

at the rate the pledges are coming in though, they’re going to exceed the 2 mill they asked for by a long way.

  2. Great news, I’ve been waiting 14 years!!

  3. i think that record held by Bloodstained is gonna get broken.

  4. Almost $1.5m already? I think it might just get the money. And probably the $4m stretch goal. Possibly in the first day.

  5. Doesn’t even need a kickstarter really. Demand has always been there. Pretty cheeky to ask for the money.

    • Well it’s a SEGA game is it not? They are more interested in mobile these days and the previous titles were considered a commercial failure, despite being well received.

      • Not a surprise considering the Dreamcast was a flop but there seems to have been a demand for another shenmue for a long time.
