The “Main” Devil May Cry Series Is Not Over

It turns out that DMC: Devil May Cry was not a reboot but rather an alternate universe Dante and the main series, which does not include DMC, will continue on it’s own path.

“After Devil May Cry 4 came out and then Ninja Theory’s DMC: Devil May Cry followed it, some fans were disappointed and felt the main series had ended,” said Hideaki Itsuno, director of Devil May Cry’s 2,3 and 4. “But I’m glad that the message is out there with Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition that the main series is not over, and that DMC: Devil May Cry did not kill it.”

“If [DMC: Devil May Cry] had been a world changing hit, it might have changed the course of the series by becoming the new DMC. But at the same time, if it was a lot less successful than it was, it might have just been a flash in the pan failure that never got followed through with the definitive edition this year,” he added.

Itsuno goes on to say he views DMC: Devil May Cry as “a little bit apart” from the original series.

I am currently wading through the revamped PS4 version of Devil May Cry 4, and also took a look at the Definitive Edition of DMC:Devil May Cry on PS4 that came out four months ago. You’ll be able to read my thoughts of DMC4 later this week, but suffice to say DMC: Devil May Cry is a much better game, quite why they are trying to extend the old series is a little baffling.

  1. The way he describes DMC is a little off – He seems to be referring to it as a stinker, when it was actually quite well received. Better than DMC4 I would have said.

  2. Meh, I’d prefer the original series. Dmc had good combat, interesting world design and all but it was brought down by the story and voice acting. I’d still prefer Devil May Cry 4 considering its more fun to pull off crazy combos and with the character design being much more bright. The demons also weren’t grotesque and uninspired and Dante wasn’t much of a dick. Still, it isn’t Devil may Cry 3 which was miles better. Devil May Cry as always had some backtracking but 4’s was the worse with nothing barely different besides ice blocking the way or some portals that send you all over the forest… then having to fight the same bosses.
