When Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst was announced there was some discussion on where in the timeline it would fit, with the option of it being a prequel being the most likely. Even we thought that was where Catalyst would fit when originally reporting on the release too. Turns out that such a conclusion was a mistake, with Mirror’s Edge Catalyst’s Design Director Erik Oeldahl saying the following to IGN.
“Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is a reboot. We basically took the things we really liked about the first game. Faith, first and foremost, the first-person free-running gameplay, and also the aesthetics, which we’ve built on, of course. But it’s a reboot.
We’re telling Faith’s origin story, so the events of the first game actually don’t really exist. Maybe they will at one time in the future.”
Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will be releasing in February 2016 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

A reboot!? After one game? I guess they didn’t have much faith in the original.
/Gets coat.

I don’t know why, but this actually reduced my enthusiasm quite a bit…
“We’re rebooting but keeping the things we liked from the first one, like the character and how it looks and plays”.
So, basically they would have gotten away with calling it an origins story?
I would think by now, most everyone in the entertainment industry would know better than using the word reboot, as long as it can be avoided.

Reboot? Hmmm – That seems strange having been only one game in the series so far. What’s the point?
Also, if it’s a reboot, then why call it ‘catalyst’? A catalyst is generally something that kicks off an event, which sounds like would in fact be a prequel. With this announcement, it sounds like it’s more like ‘Mirrors Edge: The game we wanted to make originally, but couldn’t due to time/pressure/hardware constraints’ now.
This is just going to turn out to be another remaster isn’t it? ;)

This makes it sound like they couldn’t come up with a good enough story for it to be a prequel or something, which I really don’t get.
If anything, this is making it sound like an expansion.

I actually think the opposite. More they came up with a story they liked a lot but it didn’t fit in with the story so far. Possible?

Ever since a Mirrors edge game was mentioned for this generation I have been interested at what we will see. At first it was mentioned as a sequel, then a re-master, prequel and now a reboot. Sorry EA but you have lost me now. It does not look to improved on the PS3 and now being the same as before means it has little if anything to offer me.
it could have been so much more.

A reboot that looks almost exactly the same as the original?…
