Bungie Show How They’re Mixing Up Destiny’s Strikes In The Taken King

After last week’s smorgasbord of information about how Destiny’s basic structure and systems are changing and evolving when The Taken King kicks off the game’s second year of content, yesterday’s stream focussed more on what you’ll actually be getting up to when you play.

Turns out, you’ll be shooting things, but Bungie are hoping to make the game’s Strikes more interesting to play over time. As a trio of players dove into the Shield Brothers strike, where you head into the Hive Dreadnaught to try and stop a Cabal invasion force blowing it up before you’re done looting the place, Bungie’s Deej and James Tsai explained what’s new and different.

It seems that some of the elements of randomisation that were seen in the Prison of Elders mode have seeped across, so that strikes will now feature variable encounters. This means that you might walk into a particular room and come up against different types of enemies, coming at you from different angles. It could be Cabal one time, Taken another, feature a bunch of foot soldiers or, as in this case, put you up against a Goliath Tank.

Beyond that, the climactic boss fights should also be more interesting and more varied, trying to avoid the problems the original game faced, where a lot of them were simple bullet sponges. Shield Brothers pitted the three guardians first against Valus Mau’ual and his jet pack enhanced body slams, before he ran off to let Valus Tlu’urn take a crack with a big artillery cannon strapped to his back.

It all kicked up a notch when, with both of them weakened, they combined forces and broke out some new and more powerful abilities, all the while with lesser enemies reinforcing them. But when one went down, the other took on some of his abilities as well. It all looked a lot more involved and more interesting than simply sitting in a corner and sniping away.

In addition to that, the stream started off by looking at the three new subclasses and their skill trees, which you can check out as part of the archived stream embedded below:
