New GTA Online Freemode Events Announced, PS3 And Xbox 360 Support To End

Rockstar have revealed that Grand Theft Auto Online will be getting brand new Freemode events on September 15th. “One of these events can kick off at any given moment while in Freemode,” say Rockstar. “You can customize your session to decide exactly which ones will happen – so you can play as much or as little of this new content as you like.”

Also included with next week’s update are two brand new Adversary Modes.

  • Hunting Pack: You’re part of a team tasked to deliver a priority vehicle rigged to explode if it drops below a minimum speed, while your opponents race, ram and batter to take it down.
  • Cross the Line: Heavily-armed squads face off across a neutral zone – with the goal of having all team members strategically penetrate their opponents territory to claim victory.

The update will also bring the Rockstar video editor to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The bad news is that none of these updates will be coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Rockstar will no longer be supporting these versions of Grand Theft Auto.

As we mentioned previously, we always knew there might be a point where we would reach the technical capacity of what the older generation of consoles can handle as each downloadable update requires additional memory both for assets and for additional scripting.  We have continued to optimize the entire game over time in order to squeeze as much memory as we possibly could out of the last-generation hardware and at some point, continuing to add content for those systems could cause the risk of instability to the game overall.

  1. Don’t worry. If you’ve got the PS3 version, you might have got an email from Sony offering a cheap upgrade to the PS4 version.

Just pay 2/3 of the full £54.99 price and then spend days downloading it. Bargain.

You could pop into your local branch of Game (not something I’d recommend, obviously) and trade in your PS3 copy for £8 and walk out with a new PS4 version for just 33p more than Sony’s marvellous special offer. And not have to download it, which would probably take longer than walking 10 miles to the shop, realising the shop hasn’t opened, or been built yet, building it yourself, waiting for deliveries games to sell, and then walking 10 miles back home.

    • Funnily enough I was about post something very similar, although perhaps not quite as sarcastic! :)

Does this mean though that’re switching of the PS3 servers, or just simply not updating them anymore so they’ll stay running as is?

      • FFS, proof read man! “that they’re switching off”

      • The servers will remain active on ps3. The new update is just too much for the ps3 to handle without breaking the game.

  2. I don’t need no stinkin’ PS4 version. Anyway, I’m just happy I got to Platinum the game.
