Phwoar! Look At The Curves On The PSVR Headset!

Sony have released a tech-porn video showing the gorgeous curves and sexy features of the PlayStation VR headset. It lists the 5.7″ organic light-emitting diode display (oooh!), latency of under 18ms (cor!), nine LEDs for tracking (oosh!), and other features that will make you damp in personal areas.

  1. It’s certainly the best looking VR headset and it’s at the top of my must buy list.

  2. Sounds like you need some alone time, Tuffcub!

    It is sexy though.

  3. I will wait and see if Sony abandon this within the first year before I consider a purchase.

    • That’s understandable for anyone who invested in Move. I don’t think they will abandon VR though, what with the big push VR is getting everywhere.
But i was reading somewhere recently that it’s expected that VR headsets will go through a few iterations/improvements – especially in the first five years. I would expect Sony would be the least likely to upgrade their headset in that time as it’s tied into the PS4 but either way you’re probably right to wait a bit anyway.

      • I think they may be a bit cunning. PSVR comes with an extra processing block (which they haven’t shown) which does the grunt work to give the PS4 the power to output the graphics. The display in the headset isnt going to get much better but they could upgrade the processing block, make that faster. So you’d just buy a new one of them to “upgrade”, rather than the whole kaboodle.

  4. Phwoar indeed!

I know they have a good line-up of games but I think I’ll wait a few months for the initial set of games to be released and then look at the line-up for the next 12 months to be assured that this won’t be another PS peripheral which gathers dust.

    • Wise move. It still feels like a gimmick to me. Remember when VR was ‘the next big thing’ in the 90s? That TV game show with Craig Charles? And of course, Knightmare?!

  5. So the latency is approximately (or just over) one frame if running at 60FPS. I assume that’s good?

  6. Is it wireless now? I read it had to be wired to the PS4 before, that would’ve been a bit awkward when moving about. Can’t see any wire in the video.

    • No its wired. Your not moving about really, it’s designed for use sitting down mostly.

      • Oh that kind of puts me. Although it’s not too bad as my man-cave is kind of small so walking about but be kind of problematic.

I’d love to walk around Fallout 4 in this but I guess it’ll only work on supported games or would you be able to play any game on VR but not use the 3d effect? I guess this will be answered closer to release.

      • You’d need a treadmill else you’re not going to get far are you? You can walk about 6 steps in each direction before you hit a wall of your house. That’s a pretty small play area for Fallout :P

Ocuclus are a bit fecked as their own survey has shown that people A) have small rooms and B) wont move furniture about to play games. They were planning on people having huge rooms to wander about in, which may be the case in bigger american homes but I can barely swing a cat in my London flat. None of the VR sets are for “walking” around in really.

Also you’d need some seriously decent wifi to fire 120 1080p images per second. Even the tiniest glitch in your signal and the game would look shite, hence the wires.

      • Also, if you are going to be doing all of the walking around yourself, you might as well ditch the ‘Virtual’ part & just settle for the ‘Reality’.

I hear it has better grafficks anyway! ;)

      • I guess it makes more sense really to be wired because of the weight of the battery would hurt quite a bit, as 1 hour battery wouldn’t cut it in this. Even though that could be done battery pack on the belt but yet again that wouldn’t be comfortable sitting down I guess. I understand about the walking bit like I said in my previous comment I don’t have from either. I guess if we had big homes we wouldn’t be able to afford to game as the mortgage would cripple most people. :-)

      • Sorry for so mass by posts.

@Forrest I fink it would almost like was be old having 4k 3d with surround sound in them outdoors. ;-)

    • How could it be wireless?

It’s got an HDMI and USB going from the processing box to the headset.

No way you could get anywhere near the data rate for HD display over wireless.

As for treadmills, well I suppose since niche part of the market might want them, but can you imagine the health & safety issues?

  7. Autocorrect gets me again *many I don’t know where by comes from then.

  8. Stop making me want one. I’m trying to be strong.

    • Look into Sootys eyes you want Ps VR :-)

      • Or even sweeps eyes ;-)

      • I have no idea what that means either way :)

  9. It does look like a smashing piece of kit and the tech is amazing. Not for me though, can get quite claustrophobic/uncomfortable wearing stuff on your swede for long periods. I passed my Motorcycle and Car tests around the same time but opted for the head free car mode of transport….sweet!
