Sony have passed another milestone with over 30 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold since launch. The figure is as of last Sunday and with Black Friday and Christmas on the way we can expect that number to be boosted significantly over the holiday peroid.
“PS4 continues to demonstrate the fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation hardware history, said a spokesman.
The PlayStation 4 has reached the 30 million target a whole two months faster than the PlayStation 2, no mean feat when at the start of this generation many were suggesting the console market was dead.
Microsoft have not released any sales figures since last November and in earlier financial reports they lumped Xbox One and Xbox 360 together to mask the performance of the newer consoles. Last month they announced they would not be publishing sales figures at all and will focus on “engagement data”.
The Wii U, which launched way before the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, has only recently passed 10 million sales.

I still remember the BBC’s report when the PS4 launched and the presenter said sony would struggle because people preferred the likes of Angry Birds on their ipads now. How wrong they were.
I do wish MS would give a sales update though. They must’ve passed 15m sold by now?
bunimomike
I remember something along those lines as well, fella. The biggest thing was how wrong those people clearly were. Not sure they should be commenting on the industry at all if their jobs reside with publications and media outlets. :-\

Microsoft has never used sold numbers, it’s always been shipped with them. Sony have always quoted real sold numbers.
This is how last generation, if you listened to what the media said every month, quoting Xbox360 as the monthly victor in sales, you would be sorely mistaken, and surprised to find that the early 13.5m console lead that Microsoft had at the start, that had evaporated by the end.
In short, Microsoft lied pretty much every month last generation, they are still lying now. The only thing they can’t legally lie about is yearly financials, they can attempt to hide details, but they can’t lie about them.
Ask yourself why it’s virtually impossible to find out how many Xbox Ones have been sold. When someone makes a guess at 15m, and Microsoft don’t correct them, you can bet money it’s WAY less than 15m in reality.
Starman
Shut up you tit.
AngryCoward
Nothing there is untrue, so its not be that’s the tit.
TSBonyman
Impressive stuff, especially outmatching PS2 sales.
ron_mcphatty
Definitely! Was the PS2 the best selling games console ever? Even numbered PlayStations seem to be a winning setup, Sony should go straight to 6 next.
JR.
They used to say the same thing about Resident evill… :)
The Lone Steven
It was the best sellling games console until the Wii dethroned it and it still put up a fight. I could be wrong though.
Does this mean the PS5 will just be a giant box with a picture of the PS6 on?
JR.
Just did a quick search online and wii ‘only’ sold 101 million units in its lifetime. PS2 is still number one with over 157 million units. Original Playstation, 104 million. PS3, 86 million. Xbox 360, 85 million.
Not sure how accurate that is, it was the first link i saw.
Didnt realise the first playstation console sold so many?
The Lone Steven
Damn. Didn’t know they sold that many. It is truely a statement of the innovation(at the time) that the PS2 offered just by literally being a much more powerful PS1 and a dvd player/music player. (I don’t know if it was a PS1 on steroids or not in terms of hardware.)
It’ll be interesting to see if anything can beat the PS2’s records. Mobile gaming does not count. Nor does the virtual boy or Tiger’s knock off of the virtual boy or Tiger’s wristwatch. What? They are the latest things the kiddies are playing with nowadays, right?
JR.
The DS is pretty close to PS2 numbers with 154 million sold but i suppose they’re bundling all the different variations together there. Plus its a handheld not a traditional console.
JR.
There’s no stopping it now. Snowball effect. And we haven’t seen any of the big exclusives yet.
I thought this gen might be the last but we could see one more yet.
AngryCoward
Indeed, gamers buy what their friends have, and that is PS4.
Microsoft are still embarrassing themselves by either avoiding the question, or using meaningless shipped numbers.
All we know, is in the US, it’s around 2:1 in favor of PS4, and in Europe it’s over 4:1
bunimomike
Microsoft aren’t really embarrassing themselves. To give them credit, they are fighting tooth and nail to get the gamer’s respect back as well as undo the damage they did at the announcement E3 many moons ago. Not just that but they’re also bring great franchises to the platform, just like Sony is doing with the PS4.
Phil Spencer is acutely aware of what went wrong but he’s earning respect by saying so and how they want to fix the mistakes of the past.
AngryCoward
How is an underpowered, spec cut console with deception about cloud rendering and direct x updates getting respect back?
How is artificially trying to close the performance gap via buying developers and reviers getting gamers respect back?
How is badmouthing Sony and gamers choices getting respect back?
The performance gap between PlayStation exclusives and xbone exclusives is bigger than ever, Microsoft put greed above everything else, carried arrogance from last gen. That’s not getting respect back.
camdaz
Well done Sony, certainly got it right with ‘for the gamers’.

LOL… That is all you need to know. Sales of the Xbox One are worst than even the worst estimate.
The Lone Steven
Learned from mistakes, they have.
Doing well, they have.
Back Bring, Kevin Butler, VP of stuff, they must.
Yoda, why am i talking like?
Hopefully, this means they’ll reduce the price of the PS4 next year and do more bundles.
