  1. Microsoft not getting the sales they expected for this game?

    • A bit of that maybe.

I’ve played ESO since launch on PS4 completely free. Xbone and PC is also completely free since they droped the subscription and became “ESO: Tamriel Unlimited” before console launch. This F2P model is why I and plenty of other folk we’re swayed into buying it. So I really don’t understand what this article is about.

      • Wait now I understand. Anyone on PC or Xbone that doesn’t already have the game can download it and try it for a week free of charge.

    • Microsoft has nothing to do with ESO apart from approving it for Windows and X1. It’s Zenimax that is both the developer and publisher.

    • Quarter of the PS4 installbase, I guess not

  2. Sometimes it’s not a bad thing to do. I remember when demos of games were common place, now you hardly see them. Games are expensive and ive purchased many games that just didnt play the way I expected and have been left in my draw gathering dust. Second hand market as it is means it’s not worth selling second hand. As a result i rarely buy games like I did on last gen consoles. Definitely think there need to be more demos and timed trials. I’ve lost confidence in buying games based on reviews.

    • I loved skyrim and played through it twice. Would love to demo this game out before I purchase it

  3. Free to Play weekends work really well on Steam, so it would be nice to see Sony getting in on the action also at some point.

  4. I read elsewhere it was meant to be on ps4 too but there is a technical issue preventing it currently. Has there been a free play weekend for anything on PS4 yet?

On topic, it’s a pretty good game really, not reliant on teaming up as you’d maybe expect.

    • It’s surprisingly good, once you get past the 40GB install followed by another 25GB download.

Teaming up with other players kind of accidentally happens anyway. A lot of people running in to kill things you were trying to kill. But you still get the benefits of killing stuff even when everyone else does half the work (and it turns some quests from “kill 5 enemies and collect something from them” into “try and get at least 1 hit in on 5 enemies before everyone else kills them and collect the things”.

It does kind of feel like they’ve taken Skyrim, stretched the map out to many times the size, and then just slapped on a bunch of NPCs to fill in the gaps and give you something to do on the way.

Definitely wouldn’t be worth it if it had a subscription involved, or even at full price. But pick it up for £20 or so, and you get a decent amount of value from it.

      • Yeah I like the simplicity that players who are around will help you, without the need for any headsets and tactical discussions. Basically just kill everything. I think it’s my most played game this year, and it’s kept my attention way longer than The Witcher 3 did. (overrated IMO)

      • I hate MMORPGs. I was fortunate to participate in one of the early beta test weekends and that about describes it. It is, without a doubt, a great game for fans of that type of game. For me though, I doubt even a Fallout MMO would be enough to overcome the hatred :):)
