Prolific Crack Group Give Up Cracking Games For A Year

Renowned Chinese PC pirate group 3DM have vowed to stop cracking games for a year to see what impact it has on game sales.

“We just had an internal meeting. Starting at the Chinese New Year, 3DM will not crack any single-player games,” says a 3DM representative,”We’ll take a look at the situation in a year’s time to see if genuine sales have grown.”

Instead, the group will focus on localising games for the Chinese market. The group had previously said Just Cause 3 was too hard to crack, as was Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Obviously other groups will continue to pirate games but this has to be seen as a massive win for the game publishers.

  1. This is almost hilarious. Almost. They’re going to look at the figures to see what changes? Surely, close to nothing. :-\

Um. This is sheer lunacy at its finest.

    • Their motives are dubious, but hey, stops people stealing games doesn’t it?

  2. Really, it’s going to be impossible to ascertain how much of a factor this will be, out of all the other things that affect game sales.

Also as mentioned, this is just one pirating group in China, other groups will crack other games, and all the thief’s will probably just pirate one of those other games.

Credit to the Denuvo software used in these Square Enix games, it’s not Draconian DRM, but very strong anti-tamper software (as I understand).

  3. There’s a joke about cracks here!

  4. Hopefully some of the cheapskates will actually pay for a game now!
