Portal And Half-Life Movies Are In Development

Movies based on video games are going to plague the cinemas in coming years by the looks of it, with  J.J. Abrams confirming what he hinted at back in 2013 – movies of both Portal and Half Life are in the works.

“They’re in development,” said Abrams, “And we’ve got writers, and we’re working on both those stories. But nothing that would be an exciting update.”

Dan Trachtenberg, who directed the recently released 10 Cloverfield Lane, a semi sequel to Abrams own movie, found fame via his short fan film Portal: No Escape, and would be the obvious choice to direct a Portal film.

“We’re aware of the cautionary tales of movies that became games and vice versa,” said Abrams back in 2013. “Our goal here to is to treat the world Valve has created in both these properties like anyone would a book or some great story that comes from a pitch or original script — just to treat it with the respect they treat their games and their players with.”

  1. Excellent short movie, it seems to have a more serious tone than the game but they can’t make a Portal feature film without the psychotic humour of GladOs.

    • Great little film. Hopefully the Half-Life and Portal films tie together in some way, as is implied in that Half-Life game that left us with a massive cliff hanger about a decade ago. Whatever happened to Episode 3?

      • I’m forever hopeful that Episode 3 will appear but i also wish they’d release the original Half Life on the PS2 classics.

  2. half life would make a better film of the two..signature crowbar on standby, throw in some black mesa army types and bring on the carnage.

  3. if they make movies, at some point the lead characters are going to have to speak, right?

    • Good point! And who would play Freeman? Gary Oldman?
