Rise Of The Tomb Raider Will Release On October 11th For PS4

Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that Rise Of The Tomb Raider will be released on October 11th for PS4, and that its full title will be Rise Of The Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration. This edition of the game will include the main game plus a new story chapter called Blood Ties, which will have PSVR support, Endurance mode co-op play, all previously released DLC, and an artbook in the limited edition.

Blood Ties takes place in Croft Manor where Lara must prove she is the rightful heir to the property due to her uncle staking a claim. It won’t be all looking for deeds as the Nightmare mode has Lara face off against zombies that invade the estate. Endurance mode will allow players to survive the wilderness and explore tombs together, while contending with opposing forces.

All of the content announced will be available for Xbox One and PC, with season pass holders getting it for no extra charge. VR support for Blood Ties appears to be exclusive to PSVR for now.

  1. Square might actually manage to sell a few copies now.

    • Yeah, a few more than the one million plus sold on PC/Xbox One :/

      • 1 Million copies on PC, XB1 and 360 isn’t very good when you consider that the reboot sold 8.5 million copies, I think. Doubt they’ll sell 7 million copies on Playstation platforms now so they must have lost out big time. I’m glad though because it will hopefully mean the end of these ridiculous timed exclusive deals. I hope this was a very costly mistake for them.

      • @JR they haven’t released recent sales stats for it in ages. It’ll certainly have reached way more than a million by now. It was never going to get 8.5m when the reboot was available to an install base of over 250m consoles, Rise had less than half that available. In the interests of parity, are you also happy Street Fighter 5 missed it sales targets?

      • Yes I hate exclusivity deals on either platform. Plus I don’t really care about Street Fighter whereas Tomb Raider is one of my favourite game series. The reboot was a new start for the series which is now tarnished by the negativity surrounding the mishandling of the timed exclusivity deal.

I’m not sure how well games like Tomb Raider sell months after release. Unless you’re talking COD or GTA, I imagine they sell very well at release and then drop drastically. I figured that once they drop off the charts they aren’t selling many copies. But lets say sales are 2 million copies to date. That’s still over 6 million sales light and shows (if if wasn’t already obvious) which platform the majority of Tomb Raider players are. How ridiculous then that Square Enix would agree to an exclusivity deal on a platform that’s 50% smaller than the platform where the majority of your fans are.

      • Thing is they accepted the deal when it was clear the PS4 was far ahead in sales, so I can only assume MS offered so much money it offset any lost sales from people refusing to buy out of a dislike of the deal. I’d put money on the ps4 version outselling the combined sales so far. As you say, more TR fans are on playstation and I’d argue you’re getting a great value package for £45 or so.

      • Starman – it’s something I’d love to know about if the details were ever released. How much did it cost Microsoft to win them over? What were their sales projections? Did the latter even matter considering Microsoft was pumping money into the coffers. How did this affect staff? Were all happy with the selling of ones soul, etc. :D

      • I don’t think timed exclusivity is that much of an issue in and of itself, but rather when it happens to a popular multiplatform title, it’s generally rather bad showing.

In this instance Microsoft was involved, which brought some angry pitchfork folk out shouting about money. Comically every major publisher has a board room full of people…

  2. Not as good as the first one but worth a pick. Will pick this up again as it comes with the DLC

  3. Ah good, all dlc included, although Blood Ties sounds like something that would take place in a courtroom.

  4. That’s a great deal for anyone yet to play it, one of my favourites of last year. More exploring and puzzles than the reboot, which is what everyone wanted (mostly).

    • It was more of the same in the best way. Things were refined, graphics looked a bit better and it was great to have another bit of top-drawer entertainment in this genre.

      Top stuff. :-)

  5. I thought it was a step sideways (perhaps even slightly backwards) but it’s still a decent game.

Not where I wanted TR to go after they did such a great job with the reboot but it’s worth playing.

I can’t see many people being happy paying full price for a year old game though – even with all the dlc thrown in. Should be £30 max.

    • Where did it go wrong then? I’m sure you said you wanted more exploration/puzzles and less killing, which it had on both counts.

      • The tombs were improved but still optional for the most part and no where near long enough. Kill count was ridiculously high (650+ on my first play through – and I avoided enemies where possible). The plot was awful with the lost tribe and the secret order. The open world areas were an unnecessary distraction, diluting an already weak narrative. Environments were too similar to the reboot and not varied enough. Weapon upgrades didn’t really affect the game as much as they did in the reboot. You have four bows, four pistols, four rifles, four shotguns… Collectables/Journals were dull compared to the reboot. The mystery and horror element from the reboot was missing but hadn’t been replaced with anything else.

It’s not a bad game – it plays flawlessly and looks great – but there were so many things that I didn’t like. There was a lot that I did like too because I loved the reboot and this is very (VERY) similar but overall it felt lacking. IMO it’s not as gripping or memorable as the reboot when it had the potential to be incredible. They wasted a great opportunity to blow us all away and instead gave us more of the same but no way near as good.

  6. “Endurance mode will allow players to survive the wilderness and explore tombs together, while contending with opposing forces.”

    Sounds like co-op?

  7. Glad to hear about the. Enjoyed the TR reboot that I completd it on xbox and ps4 which is very unusual for me given the lack of gaming time I have in general. Look forward to picking this up.

    • ‘Glad to hear about that’ is what I meant to say, stupid capacitive keyboard / chubby fingers combo!

  8. Forgot it existed. Please let it be the last timed exclusive major game on any system. I’ll give indie and smaller developers a free pass due to their size and experience and not wanting to overwhelm themselves.

Probably should get the reboot on PS3 at some point.
