The Game Awards 2016 Nominees Have Been Announced

We predict the winners

The utterly rubbish – yes they are, don’t argue – Game Awards are back to hand out awards off camera and make you watch even more trailers and hype for games that won’t be out for years, and will probably be a bit crap. Yeah, take that No Man’s Sky!

Anyway, the Awards, which are picked by a whole 29 “global media and influencer outlets” (aka screaming YouTubers and Kotaku), rather the general public, will be broadcast on the interwebs on December 1st. They will be hosted by the man who speaks for the whole of gaming, Geoff Keighly! Yay! I am such a fan.

Here are some (but not all) of the nominees along with my predictions as to what will win.

Game of the Year

  • Doom
  • Inside
  • Overwatch
  • Titanfall 2
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Well it’s going to be Uncharted isn’t it? Even if you think the other games are better, the fact that it’s the last one means it will get the award,  just as the last Lord of the Rings film won everything, ever.

Best Studio/Game Direction

  • Blizzard
  • DICE
  • id Software
  • Naughty Dog
  • Respawn

See above, going to be Naughty Dog.

Best Narrative

  • Firewatch
  • Inside
  • Mafia III
  • Oxenfree
  • Uncharted 4

Also see above for why Uncharted will win, although Firewatch may be in with an outside chance.

Best Art Direction

  • Abzu
  • Firewatch
  • Inside
  • Overwatch
  • Uncharted 4

Uhm, Uncharted FTW again. Maybe Overwatch as it hyper-stylised, but it really should be Uncharted.

Best Music/Sound Design

  • Battlefield 1
  • Doom
  • Inside
  • Rez Infinite
  • Thumper

If it’s Rez Infinite then the entire industry needs spanking, the music was awful. Probably Doom.

Best Performance

  • Alex Hernandez as Lincoln Clay (Mafia III)
  • Cissy Jones as Delilah (Firewatch)
  • Emily Rose as Elena (Uncharted 4)
  • Nolan North as Nathan Drake (Uncharted 4)
  • Rich Summers as Henry (Firewatch)
  • Troy Baker as Sam Drake (Uncharted 4)

Nduh, last Uncharted, last Nathan Drake, Nolan North HAS to win this. It is a bit of shame as pretty much everyone in the category could have won any other year.

Best Independent Game

  • Firewatch
  • Hyper Light Drifter
  • Inside
  • Stardew Valley
  • The Witness

Probably Firewatch, The Witness confused far too many people.

Best Mobile/Handheld Game

  • Clash Royale
  • Fire Emblem Fates
  • Monster Hunter Generations
  • Pokemon Go
  • Severed

It’s going to be Pokemon Go, obvs.

Best VR Game

  • Batman: Arkham VR
  • EVE Valkyrie
  • Job Simulator
  • Rez Infinite
  • Thumper

You get to be actual Batman in Batman: Arkham VR and that trumps everything, ever.

Best Action Game

  • Battlefield 1
  • Doom
  • Gears of War 4
  • Overwatch
  • Titanfall 2

Should be Titanfall 2, will be Overwatch.

Best Action/Adventure Game

  • Dishonored 2
  • Hitman
  • Hyper Light Drifter
  • Ratchet & Clank
  • Uncharted 4

Uncharted 4 will win once again. Don’t release games in the year a Naughty Dog game comes out if you want to win awards.

Best Multiplayer Game

  • Battlefield 1
  • Gears of War 4
  • Overcooked
  • Overwatch
  • Rainbow Six Siege
  • Titanfall 2

Aww bless that Overcooked got a nomination, but nothing will beat Overwatch.

Most Anticipated Game (Fan Voted)

  • God of War
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Mass Effect Andromeda
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Red Dead 2 innit.

  1. It’s quite cute that you seem to imply there’s something wrong with 29 picking the winners rather than the general public. If there’s one thing we’ve learned this year (apart from just how long a list of people who died can be) it’s that the general public are a bunch of assclowns who shouldn’t be allowed to vote on anything, ever.

And why isn’t No Man’s Sky nominated for anything? ;) Not even the music?

So if Uncharted 4 wins everything because of the Lord of the Rings Theory of Awards, does that mean we’ll get some sort of trilogy of prequel Uncharted games that everyone pretends they didn’t want or like while greedily pre-ordering 6 copies each?

    • You make an excellent point.

Also I am very cute. Thanks *winks*

    • Agreed about NMS soundtrack, it’s brilliant!

    • “If there’s one thing we’ve learned this year (apart from just how long a list of people who died can be) it’s that the general public are a bunch of assclowns who shouldn’t be allowed to vote on anything, ever.”

Lol, are you one of these people crying and moaning about the results of democratic vote not going your way? Perhaps we should just scrap voting and let the highly educated rich people decide everything. I mean its not like they have ever caused a banking collapse or gone to war under false pretence or anything like that.

      • Ah, you’re going for that tactic are you?

We’ve had two huge examples of voting disasters this year. Brexit (a minority voting to leave) and the US election (an orange faced lunatic wins despite having less votes).

Neither really a good example of democracy (since a minority wins) and both cases where the winning side explicitly stated beforehand that if the result had been the other way around, they’d be “crying and moaning” about it and not accept it.

Also, there was the Boaty McBoatface incident where a majority was ignored.

      • In all fairness, it’ll be a few years yet before anyone can judge whether the Brexit vote was a disaster or not.
As for the US election, I didn’t want Trump or Clinton to win – that would be/is a disaster either way in my opinion.

      • At the last general election, a “minority” of people won that too. Your point being?

      • Erm…. awards voted for by the public tend to be massive arguments and a case of popular ones winning. It is always unreliable if a “as voted for by the public” award is ever given to a game. It is the gaming industry version of a gold star but the material used is so cheap that it wears off by the end of the car.

      • The problem with the Brexit vote isnt that it was a minority that won (it always is, as mentioned above), its that the result was so close that no matter what happens now, half the country will hate it.. All its done is create division. Personally, I think the “pass mark” for something as big as this should have been much higher, like 70% or something.

Also, was Uncharted 4 even that good? I’ve played about a third of it and kinda just drifted away from it..

Also, also.. Are these just PS4 nominations? If PC is included too, then Elite Dangerous should take the VR award by a long way.

      • The coverage of the election here in the UK was shamefully biased so it’s no surprise that most people seem to be against him.

Give the man a chance. He can’t be any worse than Obama was or *shudder* Clinton could have been.

  2. I quite like the music in Rez. It is quite old though, 15 years old right? Seems a bit weird to nom something that’s 15 years old for an award this year, just because it’s on sale in a new package, you could say the NES is this years best console then. NES vs PSVR?

  3. To be fair, Uncharted 4 has been the stand out game of the year and well deserves to clean up, imo.

  4. Playing through Uncharted 4 at the moment to get a refresh. Would be very surprised if it didn’t walk away with a cluster of awards under its arm. Such a fantastic game.

Great to see that Overcooked got a nomination but as TC points out, Overwatch is a multiplayer phenomenon that demands top spot in that category.

    • Shame there isn’t a co-op category. So very different to the usual competitive multiplayer fare.

  5. Ah, the “Game” awards. Wait, this is the first time i’ve heard of them. Damnit, i was going to be really snarky and condenscing about it. Erm.

You have to pay £5 to reserve the award only for them to cancelled it on award day? Or pay £200 for a collector’s edition they never intended to stock?

    Or they go under again?

And of course, “Selected media outlets.” Why do i get the feeling IGN aka “as trustworthy as David Cameron in a room with a pig) is one of them? And the other 28 are let’s players, twitchers(And some are the “Hey, look, I have bewbs! STARE! DON’T REALISE I AM AWFUL AT HIS! STAAAAAAAAAAREEEEEEEEE!” type, that type exists.) and erm… Er…

one or two decent ones? Doubtful they would get someone like AngryJoe involved as his style may be deemed as bad for business.

At least, it can’t be as bad as Doritos AWards sponsered by Mountain Dew. Wait, you wanted to this for games? NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDSSSSSSSSSS!, awards. Seriously, spike, what were you thinking all those years ago?

Why is there no porn award? Surely, Overwatch deserves it’s award for contributions to the genre of video game porn. I have a perfectly valid reason for bringing it up. It is a very underappricated genre. It deserves some recongistion.

  6. I got sent a Titanfall 2 40% off code that brings it down to £30 on the ps store if anyone wants it?

    • I got one for 43% off. Which brings it down to less than it costs elsewhere for a change.

So what’s wrong with it that it’s getting such a big discount already?

      • Yeah, 43%, my mistake. Code is 66NJN8CFL7 if anyone wants it!

      • Nothing wrong with it whatsoever, it’s excellent in fact, but it’s had disappointing sales because the idiots at EA released it alongside battlefield and CoD. I guess they’re just trying to get some sales.

  7. Uncharted 4 / Firewatch are the standout games for me.

Most Anticipated Game is a tough one… All of them.

    • Firewatch is one that really came out of nowhere and impressed me on every level, U4 was always going to be close to the top of the pile.

My most anticipated is Zelda, RDR2 next and then draw straws on the next 3.

  8. Story aside, I didn’t really care for Uncharted 4 so there are some tricky choices there.

My Game of the Year is probably DOOM. Was so much better than I expected and proof that, sometimes, its OK for a game to just be about shooting stuff in the face.

Best Studio/Game Direction: Blizzard for me. Overwatch is a lot of fun and they’ve done a great job of supporting it since launch and keeping people coming back with new stuff.

Best Narrative: OK Uncharted should definitely get this one. While the gameplay did nothing for me, the game’s storyline was excellent and tied things up nicely.

Best Art Direction: again, has to be Uncharted. Beautiful game.

Best Music/Sound Design: DOOM. Game is such a rush and the sound track that goes with it is spot-on.

Best Performance: Personally I think Troy put on the better performance in U4 but a lot of that is probably because I dislike Nathan Drake as a character.

Best Independent Game: Inside was excellent and gets my vote.

    Best Mobile/Handheld Game: who cares?

Best VR Game: again, who cares?

    Best Action Game: DOOM.

Best Action/Adventure Game: Ratchet and Clank for me. Stunning game that is a lot of fun and easily worth the £25 they were asking for it.

Best Multiplayer Game: Overcooked. What a cracking little co-op game. Really enjoyable.

Most Anticipated Game (Fan Voted): Red Dead 2 all the way :)
