Well this is confusing. Three weeks ago Ubisoft announced that they were switching strategies with their DLC, so that you no longer feel the need to buy DLC in order to get “the full experience. With regard to multiplayer, that means that new maps, modes and characters will all be free, and they’ve confirmed that this is the case for For Honor.
“So everything that’s matchmade [including] new modes and new maps, will be given for free to the players,” Game Director Damien Kieken said to Eurogamer last week. “We’ll also have other free content. We are a big team supporting the game after launch.”
The question is what this means for the season pass that was announced and has been available for pre-order since E3. It’s still available for $40 and as part of special editions, but what will it include? If it’s not maps or modes, as Damien ruled out, then characters are left, but if they have new moves or abilities, that also goes against the philosophy of not locking content away. The Xbox Store description still reads that it containts “a year’s worth of expansions, exclusive content, and more.”
Another possibility is that it now follows the Rainbow Six Siege model. In that game, the season pass unlocks all new characters a week before they’re available to anyone else. However, you can also unlock new characters by earning a bucketload of in-game Renown or by purchasing them with the microtransaction currency of R6 Credits.
Either way, Ubisoft really ought to clear up what the For Honor season pass will contain sooner rather than later. We reached out to Ubisoft at the end of the last week, but they declined to comment, saying, “We don’t have further details to share yet.”
