There was quite a stir earlier this year when DICE admitted that Battlefield 1 would not contain the French Army at launch, but that they would instead be added as DLC later down the line. That DLC is called They Shall Not Pass and will be released in March 2017, with DICE previewing its contents and themes on their blog today.
So yes, the French Army is being added to the game, but their first appearance will also coincide with new maps based around the Battle of Verdun in the cold of February 1916, and the Battle of Soissons in late 1918.
Verdun was the longest battle of the war, lasting a staggering nine months and utterly destroying nearby villages of Samogneux, saw grim fighting through Fort Vaux, and turned the nearby forest to ash. In particular, they take inspiration from the initial fighting in what would come to be known as the Devil’s Anvil.
The map based off the Battle of Soissons, in contrast, sees a massive French tank assault, with fighting around the bridges over the Aisne River and the village of Fismes.

They not only omitted the French from the game, they actually include a battle fought by the French and then put Americans in their place instead.

Lying sods! I was expecting Gandalfs and Balrogs! Pull your crap together, EA!
Joking aside, removing France to sell as DLC was a dumb decision. They shall not pass is a rather rubbish name for DLC. It sounds like a trophy! In fact, it is a trophy! Probably. I ain’t looking up it but I am sure it is a trophy in at least one game.
Surely “Verdun.” would have been enough?
