While there has been some concern lately over Sony’s handling of its VR output it does appear the company sees a long future with the tech, at least if a recent patent filed by Sony is to be believed. The patent filed refers to beam tracking for the PSVR headset, similar to the way the HTC Vive headset is tracked through the Lighthouse stations. This way of tracking is more accurate than Sony’s current design of using the PS4 Camera to track the PSVR headset.
There’s also mention of the headset connecting to devices wirelessly which could mean Sony is researching ways to make its headset wireless, likely to be seen in the next iteration if one is released. These patents were filed last year and were only published last week so Sony has been thinking of the wireless headset for a while. Of course companies patent things all the time that never come to fruition. Three years ago Sony patented a new Move controller design which had a touch pad, and that never appeared on the market. If the wireless PSVR headset is happening don’t expect it for a while yet. There’s also the fact the patent may not be granted if it is deemed to similar to other technology already available.

Sony are just patienting this to secure it. I don’t think we’ve seen enough evidence of them thinking VR is a key part of the Playstation future – software is where they make money, and the support for PSVR is good, but not great.

It’s the obvious next step for the PSVR’S successor, along with an improved display.

Hmm, DS4 only? not Move controllers too? Or could it be that the Move bulb LED can’t be tracked in the same way that the DS4 chevron LED can be?

I would consider venturing into the wireless abyss of VR gaming after totally blanking the first iteration of spaghetti junction that represents current PSVR.
See, jumping in and getting that Baseball cap when a Trilby hat might be on the horizon!
We’ll see ;)
