PlayStation Plus Prices Are Going Up To £49.99/€59.99 Per Year In August

The cost of PS+ is going up in the UK and across Europe, Sony have announced with an email sent out to subscribers. The new prices will be coming into effect at 00:01 BST on 31st August, and look as follows:

  • Annually, the price will change from £39.99 to £49.99 per annum. (€49.99 to €59.99 in Europe)
  • Quarterly, the price will change from £14.99 to £19.99 per quarter. (€19.99 to €24.99 in Europe)
  • Monthly, the price will change from £5.99 to £6.99 per month. (€6.99 to €7.99 in Europe)

As Sony just move to the next “round” number, that’s a 25% jump in the UK for a yearly subscription and 20% in Europe, which is a shock to the system, to say the least. It was around this time last year that Sony increased the price in the US to $60 for a year, with European prices staying level, but given the current exchange rates, this seems to be more a case of Sony bringing our pricing in line with America’s. $60 works out to around £45 and €50 today before taking into account local taxes.

If that’s making you reconsider whether or not you want to continue with PS+, you need to check whether or not our subscription will automatically renew. You need to head to your account settings and turn the “auto-renew” toggle to off, doing so at least 48 hours before your next payment is due.

Alternatively, if you’re thinking you’ll probably be playing video games online in 2020, maybe it’s time to stock up and get a few years worth of PS+ all in one go!

Update: it’s Europe too.

Thanks, tonyyeb

  1. It’s been unscientifically decided that this may or may not in fact be the result of Brexit, Donald Trump, the Russians or the Israelis. What/Who else don’t we like? I’m sure they had a hand in it.

Well, I suppose £4 a month isn’t completely ridiculous but I only subscribe for the extra cloud storage and the ‘free’ games – most of which I never even have the time to play.

I guess, this explains why the PS Plus games have been a bit better recently.

This is what happens when there’s zero competition and democracy prevails.

    • £4 a month is pretty much exactly what the £40 a year in 2010 would be now, according to various things that calculate that stuff if you spend 3 seconds googling one rather than jumping straight to the outrage over the price “hike”.

Obviously Sony rounded that up to a neat £49.99, which will be what the price should be in a year or so.

If the price doesn’t go up again for 3 years, it’ll be cheaper than it should be, assuming inflation at the same rate as the past 7 years.

By that point Brexit will have happened though and we’ll probably get a special UK price of £99.99. Or the Orange-faced shit-gibbon will have pissed off the wrong country and we’ll all be dead and it won’t matter.

      • I don’t mind the price hike. I don’t love it (who wants to pay more?) but I accept that we haven’t had a price increase for many years.

Some people are just so desperate to be outraged and offended about everything. More so when they dislike a person or in this case, a company.

These are the kind of people who will accuse President Trump of being a racist if he orders a vanilla ice cream because he didn’t even consider ordering chocolate.

Speaking of whom, DJT just tweeted that he will ban all Japanese people from entering their great, great nation if the price of PS+ increases in the US. Come on Teresa, where’s your backbone? Let’s build a wall around Sony HQ in London. More to the point, let’s build a wall around London – vile place.

Also, let’s ban the Swiss and make them put those extra peaks back into T_b_e_o_e (previously, Toblerone).

  2. I dont suppose they will offer an MP only options for the subscription. I very rarely play any of the plus games but im always gaming online. £50 a year is far too much for that service alone, especially when i can play MP on PC for free.

    • The games are a bonus really, you never used to get them when XBL started charging. The price would probably drop by a fiver, a tenner at most for just online.

      • Still doesnt answer the question as to why we need to pay to play online when the same games on PC do not require payment for online. Whos paying for the servers on PC, game devs, so why are we paying sony?

Sony also stated when they announced that the PS4 would be pay to play online that the money would go back into the network infrastructure. Is the PSN any better today than what it was when it is free? Not much, not considering how much revenue they would have raised from plus subs.

      • Because PC isnt a closed system. Its not run by EA or Activision or Microsoft, no one “owns” it. If Activision said “OK you pay to play our PC games online” no one would buy Activision games. If Steam had a 100% monopoly as the only way to play online, they would charge for it too.

MS & Sony have a lot in infrastructure to support. This is what Kaz said at PS4 launch.

“The main pillar for the PS4 will be online play. We’re developing many new ways to play and connect which requires a large investment of resources,” Yoshida said.

“Considering the cost, to try to keep such a service free and consequently lower the quality would be absurd. We decided that if that’s the case, then it would be better to receive proper payment and continue to offer a good service.”

      • Question: When was the last time the PSN was down for a good length of time?
It used to be every other week, almost every other day, it never happens now. Clearly they have invested in the network, and that’s what your PS+ pays for in part.

  3. It’s an absolute joke. On ps3 online play was free. Where is £50 from however many million players going?
Makes you want to give up and switch to PC gaming.

They really out to add Ps Now to the subscription sometime soon.

They havnt even given us Knack yet!!!! I am angry.

  4. I’m disgusted! You can’t post any articles that cast Sony in a bad light like this. Are you being bribed by Microsoft? YOU SHILLS!!
    …or something like that ;)

    • Ah, does anyone else remember Mr.Blighty? He was a character.

      • I think he’s going by the name Trumpymx now.

  5. If you have a shopto account, why dont you stack them up! £29,85 right now is a great price!

  6. Now i’m being asked why i don’t want to renew,oh the guilt and shame.

  7. I need to rejoin psplus for Destiny 2. Any ideas where I can pick up some discounted codes before the price hike?

  8. Fully expected, give the Pound is not worth much anymore. So no problem here, as Plus is good value for money most of the time. And I already got myself covered for the next 2 years in the recent sale.

    • Whats the pound got to do with it, the price hike is for the whole of Europe. When are people going to stop blaming brexit for everythjng??

      • I did a few quick calcs to check out the price rise in Euros vs Pounds when converted to dollars and also to japanese yen. In both cases the actual rise in price is higher for the UK than Europe. We are paying about $1.50 or 150 yen more, roughly.

IF we assume that Europe has roughly the same inflation rate as us (a big assumption as some countries have higher and some have lower, but overall should be roughly the same) you will see in another comment this accounts for most, but not all of the UK price rise. However, it pretty much accounts for all of the EU price rise.

Which leaves a couple of dollars worth of price rise in the UK that Europe doesn’t get, and that’s down to the weak pound – which is because of Brexit.

        phew.

      • I’ve not mentioned Brexit, the Pound went down quite drastically long before that. To be honest, personally, I don’t care too much about price rises in Poland or the Netherlands, as I only got a UK account with Plus. But for Sony that easily means exchange rate losses in the millions.

      • I left my phone at home this morning because of Brexit. It’s ruining our lives in every way imaginable :D

  9. Thank the lord for special offers.
In the last couple of weeks I’ve added two PS+ offers to my account so now I’m paid up until November/December 2020.

  10. It works out at an extra 83p a month for the yearly subscription, is it really that offensive? Everything inflates in price all the time. If you don’t like it don’t pay for it, no one is forcing you too. I’d say what works out to be around £4.16 a month for a year subscription for several free games every month and online play all year is pretty good, even at £50 a year. It’s the first price increase in a long long time, and if the past couple of months have anything to go by for ps plus games we have had some great titles for free and hopefully it’ll only get better.
