Sonic Mania keeps looking better and better with every little morsel of information, every teaser, every little trailer that Sega sneak out. The game’s out on 16th August, but with the latest trailer showcasing the game’s Spacial Stages, Bonus Stages and Time Trial mode, I’m sure that date can’t come soon enough for Sonic fans.
They showed off a tiny still image glimpse of the Special Stages at San Diego Comic Con, but here we see it in action, as Sonic is blended with F-Zero on the SNES and you chase down enemy UFOs to secure the Chaos Emeralds, nabbing blue spheres on the way until you can hit Mach level.
Then there’s the return of the ‘Blue Spheres’ Bonus Stages, where you have to run through a series of blue spheres to clear the stage, but avoid crossing your former path, as those spheres turn red once touched and will end the stage if touched again.
Last but not least, Time Attack mode lets you race through the game at top speed, setting a time against the game’s global leaderboard. It’s sure to become a staple of Games Done Quick.

Looking good! I love a bit of mode 7 and those blue spheres bring back memories… of frustration and controller smashing. I’m really looking forward to this and for once so is my wife! She only has eyes for Sonic.
