What We Played #325 – Danganronpa V3, BattleChasers: Nightwar & SNES Mini Classic

After last week’s EGX binge, it’s not surprising that this week has been something of a comedown. Still, I’ve made it through with hours of time spent with the SNES Mini Classic – which I still keep writing as Classic Mini, because it actually makes sense – as well as some rally fun with WRC 7 and a double helping of anime brawling on the go in Dragonball Xenoverse 2 and One Piece Unlimited World Red Deluxe on the Switch. I’m massively looking forward to diving into Forza 7 tonight, though I still don’t really understand why it’s not coming out alongside the Xbox One X. I want my 4K racing now!

Poor Dave didn’t make it in last week, but this week has carried on being mostly made up of playing Divinity: Original Sin 2, though he’s also been playing the new Nioh DLC – Bloodshed’s End, as well as Danganronpa V3. This weekend may well include some Cuphead though. Adam has been working through the backlog, again and has got to Oxenfree which he thinks is a bit of a special game! He wasn’t expecting to be so drawn in, or spooked, but he’s loving it! Coming soon to Switch, too release fans!

Jake has played Destiny 2 and Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy mainly, but not as much as he’d like to due to being in the middle of a big project at work. During his commute however, he’s been playing Sonic Mania and Pokémon Silver! Jim has dipped into some more Total War: Warhammer II before throwing himself into Middle-Earth: Shadow of War for review. He can’t say much about it but apparently it’s bloody huge! He also decided to buy the PS2 Classics version of Psychonauts which is seemingly just as clever and funny as he remembers from more than a decade ago. Meanwhile he’s continuing to chip away at Final Fantasy VII via Remote Play on his Vita, having set himself a Spring 2018 deadline to finish it!

Steve has been playing BattleChasers: Nightwar for review which is a fun JRPG but the pre-release build has been a little unstable. He’s also been immersed in playing The Evil Within which has been interesting going back given how divisive it was at launch. He’s loving the grimy grindhouse aesthetic and is finding it a fascinating middle ground between Resi 4 and VII. He’s also put Monster Hunter Stories to one side as he’s waiting “for the free Zelda DLC for it; massive nerd that I am.”

Miguel meanwhile has been messing around with Danganronpa V3 some more, while also playing Peach Beach Splash aaaand…more blooming Fire Emblem Heroes. Aran has been playing FIFA 18 for review, meaning no Destiny 2 at all this week. He’s now working on The Journey Down review for next week, followed by Light Tracer on PSVR. He’s ultra glad to have nine days off from Monday!

TC and Tef are both playing “being on holiday”, though as ever TC has stolen all of the limelight by being in Hawaii, while Tef has taken a slightly more local break. Hopefully they’re both chilling out!

What have you played?

  1. Got platinum for Lara Croft GO, but had to use the hint system a few times towards the end, so doesn’t feel very well deserved. Mini snes arrived today, so that’ll be my main gaming for the foreseeable.

  2. Destiny 2 as per, will be mainly focusing on Forza 7 over the weekend. Can’t wait to get home and play it.

  3. Managed to finish Resident Evil 7 without having to change pants too many times. Probably have to have another go in non-VR mode to get a few more trophies.

And I decided to give Driveclub VR a go. Which was a good decision. Ok, so it doesn’t look as good as the original non-VR game. But getting in the car and having a good look around is quite cool, and being able to look around while driving and having a better sense of distances helps. And while some people complained about feeling sick playing, the only side effect I’ve experienced is a bad case of VR Hair. But that happens with everything. Probably just my hair.

Some Star Trek Bridge Crew may have been involved again. My excuse being (a) the new series was on Netflix on Monday (and rather good it is too), (b) yesterday was 30 years since the first episode of TNG, and (c) I just fancied messing about on a starship with random people again. Going to have to play more just to beat our record of 186 people rescued from the Kobayashi Maru. Which we nearly did (by a whole 6 people) except it exploded just as I hit energise. I was having lots of fun as engineer/transporter person.

Oh, and Pinball FX3, since it’s free and I’ve got too many tables already purchased. Which you can download in a really annoying way. Not sure what it adds apart from cheats and not letting you play some of the best tables you’ve bought before (the PvZ table is missing for a start)

And this weekend I shall try and avoid being tempted by a couple of the weekend sale offers, because I’m sure some VR stuff will be on sale soon.

    • I reckon DriveClub VR must be the most accessible racing VR experience around. It’s huge amounts of fun, instant smile factor, no faffing around with settings and no jolty nausea like I got from Project Cars. If you’re after a VR party game and it comes up for sale I’d totally recommend Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, you can even play over Skype or whatever as the non-VR players only need the diffusion cards on PDF.

I’ve been playing Titanfall 2, which I started in May and then ditched for revision… or maybe it was another game while I should’ve been revising. Great speedy single player, very straightforward and fun for a muppet like me whose reflexes burnt out in his twenties and is now only good for turn-based snailfests or Journeyesque plodding.

      • That just about sums up Driveclub VR perfectly. Fun and accessible. And no excessively long loading screens. And hidden gnomes.

I’ve a horrible feeling Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes would inevitably end up being “FFS say something before I explode!”. Or the words “and that’s when I stabbed him, your honour”.

People are rubbish when they can’t see what you’re seeing. That ghost hunting game that’s part of the Playroom VR thing? I’ve tried it with assorted nieces and nephews and they all told me that the ghost was “there!”, which is no bloody use to anybody.

  4. Managed a couple of hours of Alienation, which I’m enjoying. Plus a bit of pes2016

  5. I got pretty mad about this online-only rubbish this week. When I comfortably sat down on my sofa and switched on my PS4 to play Elite Dangerous on Wednesday evening, I found out my console had just started downloading about 15GB of the announced update, and the game completely refused to be played without it. As that would take about 4h, it meant game over straight away. I unliked the game and haven’t played it since.

Instead, I tried this Neon something game we recently got with Plus, played a couple of levels, but it wasn’t my game, and was quickly deleted after that.

Then I played through Oxenfree, which is a fabulous little game, with excellent voice acting, great storytelling and quite a scary atmosphere. Highly recommended..!

  6. Heat Signature on Steam, which is a fantastic little game all about plans going badly wrong and Lone Echo on the Oculus Rift, which really hints at the future of VR..

Oh and dipped back into Stellaris, now that with the latest DLC I can basically play as the Borg :)

  7. I had just completed typing out my week’s wonderous gaming exploits and pressed the ‘Post’ button, whereupon i was informed that i was signed out and my wordy comment was lost to the ether.
Lucky you, it’s the short version this week ;)
Neon Chrome, Pinball FX3 and No Man’s Sky.

  8. I’ve been more excited about the SNES Mini than anything else PS4 wise. Not even bothered picking up FIFA or PES which is a first in many years. Neither have impressed that much in the demo IMO.

SNES Mini first thoughts after a day.

It’s like a really really small SNES!!! Looks cool

Cables: Far too short. If your TV is wall mounted you will probably suffer even more than me. Crazy that they only give 5ft length with the controllers. I had to move the couch forward in my mancave just so it wouldnt fly off the TV stand and so I didn’t have to sit on the edge of it.

Games: A pretty decent selection. Some I’m not keen on that could have had much better titles in place (no Super Tennis, no Striker, Pilotwings…etc)

Rewind function: Not great as suggested. If you want to use it you actually have to get out of your seat and hit the reset button first which is a pain. In the end I’d rather just die than use all that energy :D

Still pretty happy with it overall though.

Contra III WTF!! Can’t even do the first level. Hard as nails!!

  9. I’ve been on holiday this week and haven’t played a single game (3ds and vita are still in my carryon bag!)
Resi 7 arrived from boomerang as I left so that’s waiting for me
