This might be a bit of a humble brag, but I’ve played a whole host of games in the last fortnight that I can’t tell you about just yet. There is one game that I’ve now got free license to praise, though, and that’s Saros. Housemarque’s successor to Returnal is rather excellent, breaking the roguelite formula down further, making its bullet hell third-person shooter more accessible and weaving a bigger story around the action. It’s pretty great, and you can find my review here. The most difficult part of my review what figuring out which Bonnie Tyler lyric to riff on for the strapline…
Turning to the rest of the team, and there’s a lot of other reviews on the go. Aran’s been playing Moomintroll Winter’s Warmth, while Gamoc has had Tides of Tomorrow on the go with its intriguing take on player-led narratives. There’s also been some Resident Evil Requiem, “which is much more bearable when Leon takes over.”
With his book on the way, Ade’s spent most of the week reading through Playing with History, though he did squeeze in a couple round of Marvel Rivals and does have Aphelion in for review.
We’re roughly a month away from 007: First Light, so Jim has been trying to get in the mood for it with some Hitman 3, and specifically the Death in the Family mission, which wraps Hitman gameplay around a murder mystery. “It’s been a while since my initial Hitman 3 playthrough, so I’m now looking to hit max Mastery rank on each mission to fully complete trilogy-wide assassin career.”
Having soloed the campaign of Space Marine 2, Nic is now wondering how much better it would have been to play it through with friends. Luckily for Jason, he had friends to play D&D with, but in terms of video games, he’s reviewed Vampire Crawlers and Mini Tank Mayhem, he’s also “been playing the ADHD classic game of installing games, playing them for five minutes, deciding they’re not for me, and then uninstalling them.” I think he just needs a bigger hard drive.
Steve’s kept things suitably eclectic: “This week has mostly been spent playing the excellent Ground Zero – an indie survival horror that absolutely nails the late PS1 feel and offers a ridiculous amount of content and extra challenges. I’ve also carried on with Breath of Fire III on commutes but might just have to focus on it as often I find myself forgetting where I’m going when only playing it once or twice a week. Finally I’ve been enjoying the very Amiga-esque Replaced, which has some frustrating platforming at times but a superb atmosphere.”
And finally, Tuffcub has been kept away from his PS5 this week, and has been “playing” Excel, Word, and Cubase. Do they have Steam achievements, or something?
That’s us, but what about you? What have you played this week?
