What We Played – Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, The Mound & Black Flag. Again.

Well, it’s a shame the football is over (unless you’re from parts of the world where your team didn’t try to defend in a single line for half an hour), but with that, there’s more time to dedicate to games that you can actually win. I’ve been winning my way through Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok on Switch 2, and it’s got to be one of my favourite action RPGs of the last few years. It’s just incredibly moreish, looks great, and has so many characters to try out that you can’t possibly get bored. Besides that, I’ve been playing Sonic Battle on my new Game Boy Advance SP (which happens to be Nic’s old one), and ordering a brighter screen for it as my ageing eyes can’t cope with how dim its front-lit screen is. Seriously, were they that dim in 2003?

Laura was first up this week and told us a delightful story, saying, “I started on Black Flag Resynced this week and have had Ade watching over my shoulder getting giddy and pre-empting everything with ‘Oh this is a really good bit coming up!’ And in his defence, he’s often right!” I noted that this was suitably wholesome, apart from the looting, maiming and killing, with Laura’s response being, “As long as the killing, looting and maiming comes secondary to the wholesomeness!”

Jim finally wrapped Silent Hill 2 with the curtain closing just before it could outstay its welcome. As if one Konami remake wasn’t enough, he’s now playing through Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, telling us, “Having previously only played its FOX HUNT multiplayer mode (which is great, though I’m sure it has been long abandoned given the lack of updated). Having modernised controls is great, though I’m no purist. I would have like to see Konami rework the stealth to make it less punishing and unpredictable yet, on the flipside, it’s forcing me to actually make use of Snake’s arsenal of gadgets, picking out enemies with my thermal goggles and charting the sneakiest route possible to objectives.”

Having finished God of War: Ascension, Steve is moving on to the PSP games before tackling a replay of God of War 3. He says, “I also spent some time being terrified by eldritch monstrosities as a Spanish conquistador in The Mound and am just trying to get some more multiplayer sessions in before writing up my review. In between this I’ve been checking out the Gothic Stardew Valley delights of Moonlight Peak and clearing a few leftover demos on Steam.”

Gamoc played XCOM 2, Balatro, and Black Flag Resynced this week, which sounds like a good tactical/cardy/piratey time to me, while Aran been sailing the high seas even more literally as he’s on holiday. Given where he is in the world, that’s more AC Valhalla than AC Black Flag though.

Miguel has stayed right on gamings pulse by playing… Red Dead Redemption 2! He says, “I started it back up again and I’m really digging it this time.” He also played the slightly less enjoyable Echoes of Aincrad for review.

While he’s still playing Destiny 2 again, Tuffcub is trying to finish Split Fiction with his other half, but he says, “It’s a bit too long IMHO but almost done”.

And finally, Tef has made a start on Heave Ho 2 for our review, and really enjoyed some of the ways this sequel is twisting the physicsy swing-a-thon shenanigans. He’s also played a bit more 33 Immortals, and some games which you’ll hear much more about next week.

What about you? What have you played?
