What We Played – Star Wars Galactic Racer, Gears of War & Hellraiser: Revival

The pre-GTA rush has splurged across into October, with all the added guts, gore and viscera of horror games thrown into the bubbling cauldron of spooky October gaming. While I’ve been known to laugh in the face of scary monsters in video games – literally, when I previewed Resident Evil Requiem’s demo last summer – horror also isn’t my go-to genre for gaming. So I’ve instead sunk more time into Star Wars Galactic Racer, now that it’s out for all and sundry, dipped a toe back into ARC Raiders, and been drawn into a number of preview sessions for upcoming games and announcements.

Steve got to spoil himself this week with a pair of exceptional horror titles: Hellraiser: Revival and Silver Pines. “The former is like a BDSM sequel to Condemned with some of the most extreme body horror I’ve seen in a game whilst the latter is Silent Hill run through a David Lynch filter. Good times.”

While not as horrifying with its goriness, Jim has been playing through the blood splattering Gears of War: Reloaded ahead of starting E-Day. “After almost 20 years, the core cover-shooting gameplay doesn’t feel quite as exciting or dynamic though I have a stronger appreciation for its level design and how Epic broke up the constant firefights with some clever set pieces and mini bosses such as the Berserkers.”

It was Nick P who wrapped up our review of Gears of War: E-Day, and he had a good time with it. The gameplay is slick, there’s Horde Siege, and he’s keen to spend more time with the PvP multiplayer, but the pacing through the more open world of the story did suffer a touch. Glutton for horror that he is, he then dove directly across into Hellraiser: Revival.

Aran wrapped up his playthrough of Tales of Kenzera: Zau and enjoyed his time with the game, both for the platforming and combat, and for the story. He’s then moved on to dabble with Cult of the Lamb, where he’s beaten the first boss and is now wrangling his followers, and a bit of the first Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, with the sequel out rather soon.

Keeping up his usual jumble of too many games, Gamoc played Infection Free Zone, Shattered Worlds, Endless Rails, Way of the Hunter 2, and Enshrouded for review. He’s also getting to the end of his time with Red Dead Redemption 2, playing it with a friend throughout this whole year. “It’s a game you sometimes feel like you’re fighting to like. For example, 40 minutes without being able to save…and no autosaves according to the load menu, and then it crashed… during the finale.”

Alas, Nic B, Dom and Tuff have all been waylaid from their gaming hopes and dreams this week, so we’ll wrap things up there.

Now, what have you played this week?

  1. I finished the story of Silent Hill 2, and liked it a lot, although it got increasingly abstract later on. It was very spooky, and some of the riddles reminded me a lot of Resident Evil games. It’s a shame, though, that you only get the chainsaw in a second playthrough, so I had a quick go just to see how that weapon feels, and it’s quite good.
