Unity have teamed up with NBCUniversal to create the Universal GameDev Challenge which allows indie teams to create game concepts based on Back To The Future, Battlestar Galactica, Jaws, DreamWorks Voltron Legendary Defender and Turok. Microsoft and Intel are also supporting the competition.
Six semi-finalists will be chosen before the final winner is awarded $250,000 cash, a consulting contract with Universal, and will be able to develop their concept in to a full game. The developers have free reign to create any sort of game in any style, rather than be hampered by restrictions set by a licensing agreement.
“These are beloved brands and stories,” said Unity’s vice president of marketing Katrina Strafford. “They create a sense of wonder and imagination in people, players and developers alike. We believe the power of these brands will encourage unique creativity and expect that developers all over the world will be excited to breathe new life into these stories and worlds.”
Back To The Future, Jaws, Voltron and of course Turok, already have games based on their respective IP’s but I would love to see a Battlestar Galactica game, especially if it was based on the rebooted television series.
