PlayStation Will Have “Project Mephisto” At Gamescom

The nominees for the Gamescom Awards have been revealed and the winners will be announced on August 21st, the first day of the show. Many of the usual suspects are up for a gong but in the PlayStation 4 category one of the nominees is ‘Project Mephisto (working title)’.

The awards will be decided by a panel of journalists and (sigh) YouTubers so they will have had to get their hands on Project Mephisto before they awards are announced so the game will have to be revealed by then. I would wager the game is from one of Sony’s Xdev development teams and probably one based in Europe,  but we know what many of them are working on already. Perhaps it could be something from Supermassive?

Could the name be a clue? Mephisto or Mephistopheles is one of the chief demons of German literary tradition according to Wikipedia. The only thing that springs to mind is that Hades was the big bad in Horizon Zero Dawn, maybe its HZD2?

Here’s the full list of nominees.

  1. I thought the awards were for released games but looking at the nominations Project Mephisto isn’t the only game that hasn’t been released yet.

    • The games have to be at the show rather than on the shelves.

  2. Mephistopheles is indeed a demon in german literature, but Hades is based in greek mythology, so i dont really see a connection there!

    • Both bad demony devil things. Also: Clutching at straws

  3. This isn’t necessarily guaranteed to be a Sony game, or even a Playstation exclusive. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is in the same category and it’s definitely neither of those things.

I think something Diablo related is possible, Mephisto being one of the three big bads of Diablo II, could also be something completely different.
