As mediocre as Nintendo Switch Online is, it remains essential if you want to play online and have a safety net for your game saves and progress.
One of the major criticisms in the run up to its launch was that it seemed as though your cloud saves would simply be deleted by Nintendo as soon as a subscription ended, instead of giving people a window of opportunity to let their subscriptions lapse for a short period of time.
Thankfully, Nintendo have either reconsidered or clarified their actual position, telling IGN that “If a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, users won’t be able to access their Save Data Cloud backups. However, Nintendo will allow users who resubscribe within 180 days to access their previous Save Data Cloud backups.”
This brings Nintendo much more in line with other online data services, and it’s great to see them change their tune.
