Red Dead Redemption 2’s Mobile App Is There So You Can Turn Off The HUD

Want to know what being an outlaw cowboy at the end of the 19th century was really like? Well Red Dead Redemption 2 might be about the closest you’ll get to that outside of going camping in the American Midwest, forgetting your phone and bumbling your way into an Amish community.

One of the ways to make the game even more immersive is to turn off the in-game HUD, but that then makes actually playing the game and finding your way around a damn sight more difficult. So, Rockstar have developed an official companion app to bring all those HUD elements down and plonk them on your smartphone or tablet.

Launching on Friday for iOS and Android, the app will primarily be there to act as a map. It will connect directly to your PS4 or Xbox One and present to you a dynamic map on which you can pan, zoom, set waypoints and mark things that you want to remember about. It will also be home to Arthur’s health and other stats in real-time, so you can even turn off health and stamina indicators.

Beside that, there’s Arthur’s in-game Journal, Social Club stat tracking, the game’s manual and you can buy a digital version of the Official Guide through the app as well.

  1. Cannot contain my hype for this game, I can’t wait for Friday. Love the idea and it would be great to see other developers use the companion app we saw so frequently at the start of the generation.
I remember using the AC Blackflag app quite a bit back in the day.

  2. The release of this game cannot come quick enough!

  3. Ooo, it’s like we’re back in 2013 and Microsoft are harping on about Xbox SmartGlass again.
In all seriousness, this is cool and should be very handy.

  4. Brilliant! If nothing else I can use it to catch up on the lore while I’m on the throne. Less than two days, weee!

  5. I hope the app is useful as most of the dedicated game apps I’ve used so far haven’t added much to the games. Someone is going to get it right sooner or later, hopefully Naughty Dog will.
