Pokémon Go Gets Background ‘Adventure Sync’ Activity Tracking

It wasn’t just Niantic and the Pokémon Company that made good off the hugely successful launch of Pokémon Go, it was battery pack sellers as well. The game was a notorious battery drain, forcing you to keep the game open and the screen on in order to have it track your steps. Sure, you could use the Bluetooth button, and eventually hook it up to Apple Watch to shunt it to the background, but now the app is getting a feature called Adventure Sync that’s truly in the background.

This can sync up with iOS HealthKit and Android Google Fit to draw the distance you’ve travelled, calories you’ve burned and steps you’ve taken into the game. You won’t get to spin those PokéStops or catch Pokémon, but your steps will go toward earning Candy for your buddy Pokémon and hatching any eggs you’re incubating.

It’s a good move by Niantic, helping to reward you even when you’re not actively playing. As they said in their blog, “Adventure Sync is our next step in rewarding more players for doing what they already love to do, while providing motivation to get outside and go for a walk—whether they’re searching for Pokémon directly, or simply enjoying the sights, sounds, and people around them.”
