Sony Kicks Off Their Black Friday 2018 Sale

Whether you’re after a new console or want to pick up some games on the cheap, the Black Friday sales are already upon us. Microsoft kicked theirs off earlier this week, but now it’s Sony’s turn, with discounted PSVR hardware and a digital sale on the PlayStation Store.

If you were hoping for a cheaper PS4 Pro upgrade, you might have to wait until the actual Black Friday next week, but right now Sony have cut the MSRP of the PSVR Starter Pack and Astro Bot Rescue Mission bundle to £179.99, which is a pretty good price. It will be running until 2nd December, so there’s plenty of time to make your mind up and retailers may go lower still.

You’ve got less time for the discounted games and subscriptions though. PlayStation Plus has had its 12 month subscription cut to £39.99 (back to the price it was before the middle of last year).

Alongside that, some of the biggest games of the year have been discounted. Marvel’s Spider-Man is £34.99, while the DLC pass is £11.99 or you can grab the Deluxe Edition for £44.99. God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Collection and Detroit Become Human are all £24.99, while FIFA 19 is £34.19 and Black Ops 4 is down to £41.99.

For PSVR owners, Astro Bot Rescue Mission is now £19.99, Farpoint has been slashed to £7.99, while the acclaimed Firewall Zero Hour is £15.99.

These offers will be running until 26th November, and you can head to the PlayStation Store for the full list and the new pricing.

  1. Why do Sony keep doing this to us??

Those 3 VR games mentioned above are all pretty much essential for PSVR owners. Although Farpoint and Firewall really need an Aim controller to be at their best. I defy anyone to play Astrobot without a massive grin on their face.

And Superhot VR for £12 is worth it. And I might have mentioned before how much fun Star Trek Bridge Crew is, especially for £15. (But you might want some TNG DLC for an extra £12 as well)

I was tempted by Far Cry 5, but it’s surprisingly cheaper at Game of all places. £25 there, or £40 for the gold edition with the season pass.

The Crew 2 for £16 might just tempt me though.

They’ve also got 12 months of PS Now for £60, which seems a very reasonable price. But I don’t want to add that many games to my backlog just before christmas.

  2. Slightly OT, but wife just bought a Switch with Mario Kart & Just Dance 2019 for £299 on Amazon, which I thought was a pretty good deal.

  3. I thought the original Astrobot demo was great, but I’m not sold on the full game. Something is missing to give it that can’t wait to play more feel I was hoping for.

Firewall is still brilliant a couple months in, if you have a few mates with PSVR you have to give it a try together.

I noticed Statik is also on the list at £6.49 it’s a good one for anyone new to VR, it’s a really immersive puzzler but without any movement if you’re still getting over any nausea issues.

    • The Astrobot demo was only the first 2 levels and the first boss. The rest of the game (18 more levels and 5 more bosses, plus challenges) is even better. It’s a weird idea, putting a 3d platformer in VR, but it somehow just works. It wouldn’t work without VR either.

I guess it’s kind of a technical showcase for VR that just happens to be a very good (and cute) platformer.

And Firewall is even better now, if you’ve got a team that knows what they’re doing. Or can tell the new people what to do. Hiding in a room with 2 doors, each with a blocker and C4 on, and a signal jammer and waiting for the other team to attack is great fun. A couple of minutes of tense waiting followed by 30 seconds of chaos. Wasn’t really possible early on when people hadn’t unlocked all the equipment.

And yes, Statik is another bargain. If you like staring at your hands for ages until you realise what the solution is. Puzzles where the solution is really bloody obvious once you’ve found it, but may drive you mad before you find it.
